How I Dig & Store My Dahlias! Garden Answer Donna: I love it when you repeat like you, I learn by seeing how to do thingsand it takes me more than one time to take it in so thank you!
I do have one question I need help with. I grow only a dozen dahlias but they are in raised beds that are 2 feet wide and 8 feet long. Ive left them in the ground since I live in Northern California. but this year (year 3 or so) they didnt look good at all. They yellowed, they had leaf minors they just didnt look healthy. I put in a granular fertilizer and watered it in two or three times but nothing helped. Im wondering if its because the soil in the boxes is just depleted and there are too many tubers in there. I want to know if I can just lift the whole clump, refresh the soil, and put them right back in and if so should I do that now in the fall or later in the spring? Any advice?

Hi Laura! Dahlias are one of my top favourite flowers and because of your encouragement I have decided to grow and overwinter them for the first time in my life. I live in a climate where they wouldnt survive in the ground but this year we have extremely mild autumn. Still no frost and no frost predicted for next 10 days. My dahlias are still green and full of flowers. How long should I wait for the first fros or could I dig them up now, while they are still green? I did a lot of online reading but everyone talks about first frost.
Thanks for sharing with us your knowledge.

I don't have a root cellar, basement or any place that stays between 40 and 55 degrees to store Dahlias. I love them but don't want to grow them as annuals. Can they be stored in a closet in the house if I keep a watch on them that they don't dry out? If that won't work do you have any other suggestions. Thanks for you help. Even if you can't help me with this I want you to know you have helped me so very much in the rest of my garden and I have never been happier or enjoyed my garden as much as I have after I started watching you. Thank You!

Thanks for the video! Even when you have posted similar videos in the past, I always appreciate a refresher right in front of my face that I don't have to search for. This is my first year with dahlias and having to dig them - holy moly I couldn't believe how much they multiplied. I am not looking forwarding to dividing them in the spring, I am sure I will massacre some of them I love learning from you - the past two years of watching your videos have upped my garden game SO much - thank you a million times over

I cannot even begin to tell you how thankful I am for your videos. I have learned so much from watching you. I feel much more confident when planning a new flower bed, of which I have started 4 since discovering Garden Answer early last year. Our flower beds went from the ugliest on the block to neighbour's stopping to tell me how beautiful it looks and I truly believe that you are part of the reason why. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us and inspiring us to create beautiful outdoor spaces!

Laura and Aaron, Your wonderful videos have more impact than you can imagine. My 99 year old mother who has dementia is staying with me for a week. She was following me around the house asking what she could do. There isnt much because she is frail and forgetful. But, she watched todays episode and then sat happily for several hours viewing older videos. She loved seeing Benjamin with you and laughed every time Russell showed up. Thank you. for all you do. I hope your kindnesses return to you 3 fold.

I have a question for anybody that might know the answer. I planted dahlias in 2020 and they came up fine, I was able to cut a bunch for arrangements. This year, I started them early in pots so I'd have a longer growing season but they took even longer to bloom and many of them never got to the blooming stage. I'm in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I'm going to attempt to keep them over the winter. Has any one had a season with low production but then the next season they actually bloomed?

In reference to your spring dahlia splitting video, you were splitting a Labyrinth clump and I spotted leafy gall. You probably have it in many of your tubers, especially the ones you've gotten from Eden Bros. Please stop buying from resellers. They send people gall infected tubers and are still selling them despite so many complaints. And it's not just them. It's other places like HollandBulb/Tulip World, Longfield, Brecks, Michigan Bulb etc.

If I could suggest a single improvement to your videos. it would be adding the conversion of temperatures from Fahrenheit to Celsius on the screen for your fans not from the USA, like you did once in this video. Feet/inches to meters/centimeters would be great, too, don't get me wrong, but might dramatically slow down the production of your videos. But temperature conversion would be a huge improvement to some already great videos.

I appreciate how you explain why you do even the simplest of things like labeling for example. I tend to not think things through and I find this so helpful to me. I would just copy what you are doing but it may not be the best for my circumstance. So keep explaining even if you think its not really necessary. And I also dont have any dahlias in my garden but still enjoyed watching this video.
