Ideas for Skinny Side Yards! Garden Answer Jane: What a wonderful video & so well presented, thank you Laura. I've just discovered you when researching ideas for a new garden we have just 'down-sized' to. I've created many gardens that have all been different, this will be the smallest, it has artificial grass & the garden beds need to be raised for easier access & to overcome the total clay base with good soil and drainage.
As I live in Victoria, Australia I have to mentally reverse many of the plantings & comments because it's mid Summer here, we don't get snow & anything facing South is basically a shady area, but thanks to everyone involved you've all given me some great ideas. Now to watch some more! =)

Would you by any chance have any suggestion for what to do about my neighbors zoysia grass? Your narrow side yard video made me envious. I used to have beautiful flower beds the entire length of my house and garage. Years ago my neighbor had zoysia grass put in. why? I spent the first 3 years on my hands and knees every spring and summer digging and pulling to get that horrible invasive stuff out of my flower beds. I finally gave up and moved everything. That miserable is now all throughout my entire lawn. I swear this stuff should be banned. Do you m iw if there is any way to 1: get rid of it, or 2: stop it from getting into everything.

In June in German Village, in Columbus OH, has a haus and garden tour. The side yards are tiny and back yards postage stamp size. The yards are inspiring some have been established since the 1960s when people started buying the very small, mainly brick homes that were being condemned. The transformation is amazing. When I lived there I would try to go every year to see the imaginative ways they planted/decorated those tiny spaces.

What talented gardeners! I have a question pertaining to a narrow side yard we have. Faces east. Zone 5. We are not allowed to have fences in our neighborhood so what can we do to have that can be used as a border/hedge between us and neighbor? Would love for this area to become a shade garden. So would love your help! Many thanks!

Thank you so much for putting together these great ideas for narrow side yards - very inspiring! We have a very narrow back yard, north facing, so almost no sun. So far only moss and a fern back there. But we've recently discovered Japanese moss gardens. Would you be interested in doing a similar show, but for moss gardens?

Where are you located? Im in Lakewood, Colorado and we have rough weather here. Dry hot summers and fall and cold snowy winters and spring. But I keep trying to make it pretty. Im thinking about planting more native plants. But Other then penstemons and hyssops I dont really know what to plant. Suggestions?

I would be concerned that the apple tree is too close to your house. Tree roots of any kind are capable of displacing your foundation. Vertical space ornamentation next to a structure should be in planters or use plants that don't have roots strong enough to move concrete. ie, not deciduous trees.

I have a very challenging side path of 3 1/2 feet wide where there is no fence to the neighbor, but the edge drops off 4 1/2 feet to their driveway. It runs the length of the house-45-50 feet. Built in 1950 in So Cal so zone 8? I am curious what Laura would suggest for that area?
