Planting Seeds & Plant Maintenance In the Greenhouse! Garden Answer JoeJoe: Monty Don talks a lot about Himalayan Blue Poppies (Meconopsis baileyi) on the U. K. program Gardener's World. It is indeed a difficult flower to grow because of its native habitat (the alpine Himalayas. Part shade, slightly acidic, moist but well drained soil will serve it well. At Don's garden Longmeadow in Hertfordshire he plants them in a dappled shade garden that floods once a year from a near by stream about this time of year, so I'm sure his blue poppies benefit from the rich sediments that wash into his garden soil from that seasonal flooding. Hope that helps!

Sowed both Cambridge Blue and True Blue Meconopsis, (Himalayan Blue Poppies) many years ago. Had best results when sowing directly into the ground in bright shade with some morning sun. Cambridge Blue flowered the first year and True Blue flowered the second year. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I am so hoping that you have success; as they were truly gorgeous! The seed goes down rapidly in viability. So very fresh seed is important. At the time, Thompson and Morgan sold very fresh seed in mylar seed packages and recommended that they be sown as soon as possible.

We have a small, pinterest style, unheated greenhouse (we use a small heater when temps go below 0, a three season room, a utility room, and a couple of bedrooms that we use to overwinter, propagate, and start seeds. We have used several weather stations to monitor temps and are wondering if there is a multi zone, bluetooth system out there with an app? We dont need to monitor air quality or humidity or forecast or any of those extras so wondering if there is a product out there to only monitor temperature in multiple zones that I can check from my phone?

One of my fave memories of Butchart Gardens in Victoria BC and Kew Gardens UK is the meconopsis Blue Poppy, a true natural blue found in the alpine wilds of the Himalayas. To that end - they like COOL temps to germinate, and shade and protection from wind once established. I think your heated seed tray will be counter productive. They, like all perennial poppies, don't like transplanting either, - a better candidate for winter sowing technique? At any rate, let them keep cool somewhere- maybe underneath the hardware cloth covered shelf?

I've seen the blue poppies at Butchart in season and if you can get them to grow, they're spectacular.
I live an hour's drive from Butchart with almost identical conditions but i've never had any luck, even planting 4 cans of baby plants to skip the germination stage (some of our local garden centers do carry them, but I also have a ton of slugs in my garden and probably didn't baby them enough. Fingers crossed for yours!

You inspire me and I would love your winter sowing but we already had 94 inches of snow this winter, I must have 5 feet of snow all over my garden. And winter is not over, Im in New Brunswick Canada, Any suggestions for me? Laura your should record some music of you playing on your Piano and you could use in your video and Aaron you could accompany her with your guitar just an idea. You are both talented.

Hey Laura. Didn't the seed packet for the poppies say cool dark place about 60 degrees? When your green house gets up to 70 degrees is that too hot? or is 10degrees not a big deal? You also said semi -dark place so the clear dome may need a shade cloth over the top. Then when germination you said cooler space and shady at all times. That might be your basement. That poppy is A LOT OF WORK!

Laura, I have a seasons pass to Butchart Gardens as I am lucky to live about 15 minutes away. My bestie and I walk through the gardens each month and love to see what each new season will bring. I can honestly say the blue poppy is worth the effort! It is simply beautiful! Thanks for brightening my day daily! The gardens are so lovely if you ever make it up our way! Shannon
