Planting a Japanese Maple in a Pot (+ Tips on Growing Trees in Containers! Garden Answer Lizbeth: Laura that is a pretty planting arrangement with the Bloodgood acer! And good tips for container planting too! I was waiting for you to mention the shape of the container you used but you didn't. I know your tree has probably a lot of growth room for a few years, but those ceramic pots that bulge out in the middle then go narrower at the rim are sometimes not ideal for planting a long term shrub or tree in, if you don't change the plant out for a while to bump up the size, they can get root bound and stuck, meaning you have to break the container to remove the tree. The pots that slope out wider at the rim are more ideal for this planting

I love Angel Wing Senicio! I picked up two the other day at Lowes of all places. Gorgeous! Beautiful pot and the color combo is so striking. Thank you for all the tips on growing trees in pots. I have 4 different Japanese Maples in my yard and get lots of volunteers each year my husbands digs up and pots up in nursery cans. I have a few that are about 4 feet tall now and was not sure what to do with them. Now I know! Love you videos and garden. Thank you for sharing.

Hiya. This was a highly informative and inspirational video, we get so much from your friendly yet knowledgeable style. We love your kids and cats too by the way. We were wondering if, at some time, you could take us on a visit to your plant healer friend? You often say that you give her plants because she loves to revive them if she can. It would be great to see what she does and listen to her take on things. Just a thought, maybe when youre not so busy

Enjoyed this video and all the info about growing a tree in a pot. Could you possible do a similar type video about how to grow hydrangeas in a pots with all the helpful info. I live in zone 8b and growing hydrangeas is a real change for me because I have lots of trees and not a lot of sunny spots. So. I want to try growing more traditional hydrangeas on my porch in pots because my husband lovessss them.

I have my baby Bloodgood Maple in a medium concrete pot with lots of drainage hole. Once it gets bigger then I will move it to the larger pot. But I did not think to plant anything under or around the tree. I may just try it. I'm in Boston zone 7a. My Japanese Maples did just fine in the pot from from Spring. They are growing and budding this Spring.

I absolutely adore you guys, I love everything that you do and I cherish that you share your family too. Now, all that said the fact that red tulips grow every year makes me smile so big and I mischievously imagine Aaron popping them in the garden. I adore red in our garden, but I totally understand Laura is particular about her color scheme.

I planted a Japanese Maple in a pot about 4 years ago. I love it as the thriller and swap out annuals for pops of seasonal color. I love how the tree changes with the seasons which adds a bonus to the color scheme. I just need to remember this when selecting annuals. My favorite pinks with orange foliage arent the best complicating colors!

Laura, that looks amazing! I missed seeing a Japanese Maple in that corner. The plants below are just perfect with that gorgeous red of the maple. Also perfect timing for this video as I just scored this same maple (although much smaller) at the store. Now to find the perfect pot and a spot in the garden.

Because LIFE! made me smile! I love Japanese maples! I bet it looks beautiful from inside the sunporch as well.
Can't wait to see this area after the clematis blooms. Thank you for showing the sweet woodruff as I was unfamiliar with this plant. And my children are always happy to see the kitties.

Thanks for all the trees in pots info! I have a full sun pink dogwood in the ground for 3 years that is just not thriving and I am thinking it's a combo of poor clay soil and too hot. Have been wondering about moving to a large pot. Very helpful video today! Thanks! - - Michelle in Boise
