YTer David the Good talks a lot about 'land race' varieties of vegetables. Those are crosses between varieties you've grown in the past that have naturalized to your area.
For example, one year I planted 5 different varieties of cherry tomato in my railing planters on my side porch. The next year, I had several different, weird, varieties of cherry tomatoes show up in my side yard. Only one of those varieties has survived to this year - year 4 - and this variety comes back every year. It seems to be resistant to disease, the seeds survived 2 weeks of single digits (I'm in Georgia, grows very beautifully and is currently still producing cherry tomatoes that have an excellent flavor. I now just make sure that the plant drops its overripe fruit and I know it'll come back next year. I no longer need to 'cultivate' cherry tomatoes.
Sounds like you have a land race variety of squash.
Survival of the fittest.

Love pumpkin harvest time on GA! You grew more this year than you did last year. The year before you had a lot also! So cool to see you plant those seeds and then get to watch you harvest! If it s not a lot of trouble, can we watch you dig a few dahlias up this year? I know you ve shown us before but I grew a few for the first time ever this year and would appreciate a refresher as I think I might try to save a tuber or two! Hope the kids have a ball carving pumpkins I imagine the whole family will be at your house again this year making a tradition of it? I remember the charcuterie board you had last year for the event!

Love the Pumpkin picking! It was always one of my favourite things as a kid and to do with my kids when they were little. If those Atlantic ones at the end are the same as the Howard Dill seeds from Atlantic Canada they can get sooo big! I live not far from where they come from and they have a Pumpkin Regatta (not sure spelling there) where they use the pumpkins as boats for people! So cool and so fun! Thank you for sharing your harvest so far, I have added a couple to my running list of plants I want to grow when I eventually get a home and land to do so.

What a huge harvest in not so great soil. Amazing. Samantha hugging the pumpkin was just so sweet. I don t know what the squash is in the greenhouse. They re very cute. If you find they taste good, baking them with a little butter and brown sugar would be good. Just cut off the top and remove seeds a little dab of butter and a sprinkle of brown sugar. bake in a pan with and inch or so of water. They re so small that each child could have one of their very own. I think they d like that.

I'm struggling and at my end with trying to grow squash! I planted wee be little pumpkins, Snowball pumpkins and Butternut squash and have nothing but dead vines and squash bugs to show for it. I see people say hand pick and smash them, but how would you manage that in such a large patch. I don't have the space you do but would like to try again with the hope of getting even a few squash and pumpkins. Is there any hope of fighting a squash bug battle?

Edit: I actually think it might be the Shokishi Shiro squash from that same Etsy shop. It is a white acorn squash, but mine ended up being by a classic dark green acorn squash. The shop doesn t sell that variety anymore.
That pumpkin looks so much like the Midnight pumpkins I grew this year. The listing I bought them from on Etsy showed them as a more classic pumpkin shape, but mine ended up more round like yours.

I love pumpkins! Reminds me of being a kid. A family friend used to grow them for me for Jack o lanterns, but one year she told me to save the seeds to grow them myself because she wasn t going to do it anymore. ( we were on a farm and had a huge garden, so I did that. I ended up with a harvest like you have. I ended up selling a bunch to our local grocery store. (Back in the day where it was a mom and pop store)

What a great harvest. So fun for the kids to be involved. I am glad they were able to enjoy gathering pumpkins with their mom. I love watching your video's. I can see you and Aaron are good parents and keep the kids safe don't let other people's opinions ruin your fun. I grew up on a farm and snakes and spiders etc. were a part of life and you knew to watch out for them. Have a blessed day everyone.

So fun watching the kids get to help with the harvest. I know their going to have a lot of fun getting to help carve their pumpkin for Halloween. Love to see which face they pick to put on their pumpkin. Your living my dream Laura. We only had one house that had a really good sunny spot to grow a garden. I had a lot of fun with it.

Holy Mother of Pearl! Look at all those beautiful pumpkins and squash! Plus, you still have more on the vines. You make me smile when you get excited over something that you grew in your gardens that exceeded your expectations! I am glad that Benjamin and Samantha got to join you in harvesting the pumpkins!

The squash in the greenhouse is a Seminole. Defined by the unique shape and size and maturity date of the fruit, how well it performed in the high temperatures and poor soil.
Grown by early Americans in Florida. sandy low-fertility soil, high temps, late season.

What a fun video. Benjamin and Samantha were having so much fun helping you harvest. I tried looking up what type of squash grew in the greenhouse. I think it's a Kabocha Squash. If I remember correctly, I believe its Japanese.

When I watch your videos I have to remind myself how incredibly hard you and Aaron work! It's easy to romanticize and want this lifestyle deeply and yet forget that it take tremendous work to create it. You guys are amazing!

Love all the pumpkins! The kids are adorable. Benjamin is getting so big. You'll have a teenager before you know it. Curious if you donate any pumpkins to Benjamin's school. I'm sure they'd love to have them!

That little squash was likely a hybrid between some that you grew. Cross-pollination happens all the time. Perhaps you took a squash to the chickens and a seed made its way to the greenhouse.

Your patch is stunning! Do you struggle with squash bugs at all? Or pests trying to eat the squash? I always struggle with vining plants because of pests and I m envious of your beautiful patch!

I wrote down my favorite varieties you grew. Thanks!
Big Mac is meant to grown by itself on the vine. It'll reach its true potential better that way.
Well done, Garden Answer!
