How to grow sunflowers for your cut flower garden Jason: Here in the Philippines, I can't plant them directly in the garden not because of birds, but of ants.
Even when they are in their vegetative stage, fire ants tend to chew off the base of the stem and make holes in it. I can't figure out what's wrong with my garden bed.

I found this very interesting. I am trying my hand at sunflowers this year. Started with 4 and now I have 2. Bunnies. Lol. Would love to see more on them. Thank you. I just found your site today and I am looking forward to more viewing. Happy gardening to you.

1: 18 Yes, this is so true. Not sure about birds, but in my case, there were so many rabbits who attacked my sunflower seedlings. Even when they were 5 to 6 inches, they were frequently attacked by rabbits.

Have you ever grown Black Oil sunflower seeds? We feed the birds and some of the seeds left behind self germinate so now we are wondering if we should let them grow freely in one of our flowerbeds.

Danielle, Thanks for the good info. I have a question about starting sunflowers inside. Can I start them in biodegradable jiffy pots and put pot and all in the ground?

The deer eat mine. I stake up 6' t poles and cattle panel on Lower half and cheap flimsy garden netting on top. Works so far.
