Thought I would let you know what I do for pots as I find 1-gal garden pots not wide enough a lot of the time and far too deep. I use 1 or 2 quart milk containers on their sides with one side removed for the top and holes punched into the now bottom. They sit nicely in plant trays with their length being perfect for the tray width. This method also uses far less soil. I also don't cover the tops of the tubers so that I can see if any new divisions can be made, or to do cuttings off of the first stems, if there are more than one, Not covering the tops of the tubers also means no soil gets in the way of making a cutting.

It is Earth Day! Yay! My youngest daughter and I started our Zinnia today in K-cups & egg shells! So exciting. If you ever do a video with creative indoor planting using household items, etc. it would be great! I'm an economist and like to use whatever I have on hand! =)

Great information! Thank you for sharing this it is very helpful! I just got a bag of 15 dinner plate dahlias from Sams club for $16! I-m worried I got them too early so here I am trying to figure out what to do with them until spring! Zone 7a

I have started dahkias indoors and they atre coming on well. Some of them have enormous leaves at the start of the stem. Should I cut them off?
