Creatively,
I can't wait to try my hand at fall planting & overwintering this year! I was SOOOO prepared for my first cutting garden, but I made the mistake of planting my -plant 10-12 weeks before last frost- things in 128 cell's to try to save on space, and everything needed potted up the week I needed to do my -plant 8-10 weeks before last frost- & I just don't have the time in a week to pot things up AND plant seeds! - But I had a really productive week this week and I got caught up! I didn't get to start some things when I wanted to, but I have them started (& not too much later than planned, & ill have blooms before long, so I guess that's all that matters! I started my ranunculus too early- it's already blooming & I don't even have them in the ground! Lol! What temps do you wait for, for you to plant your ranunculus out? Also, where do you get your ranunculus?

I'm SO frustrated because I did good this year by planting my cool season hardy annual seedlings early BUT, I stunted their growth by leaving a fan on them 24/7. I thought I was doing a good thing to prevent fungus. Now, they are barely an inch tall most of them. I suppose I can't plant them out yet. What would you say the minimum height is before I can plant them out (mine mostly only have one or two sets of true leaves) and also, can I just plant out my snaps and pinch them when they are outside, when they finally reach 4 to 6 inches? Thanks for your advice!

Those seedlings look promising: ) Excited to see what they'll look like in a month or two. Have you grown delphinium directly in the ground/clay soil (not the raised beds? If you have, how have your experiences been with their growth and persistence as perennials in PA's hot and humid summers? I'm starting some magic fountain and pacific giants delphiniums from seed and wondering how they'll do as I've heard they like cooler summertime temperatures than we get here

Hey, most my hardy annuals say sow direct. I wounder if this is because they don't like being transplanted or just because it's easier. I like to watch my seedlings germinate on the windowsill and then prick out into module trays.
I sown lots of hardy annuals in October or Sept in rows at the allotment. But the weeds have taken over and there is a drainage problem and the whole site it flooded. I enjoyed watching this video. Thanks for sharing

Thank you for this! I saw your video in the fall, I have 150 little baby plants going into the garden. I keep thinking this is nuts but then I flashback to your videos and I-m going for it. Also, when I pinched my snaps I tucked the tops into soil and they are growing as well. Can-t wait to see your garden in the warmer weather. Btw, I-m over in New Jersey and feel more confident growing things very similar to you.

Just curious how much humidity is too much for the ranunculus? I-m
In zone 7b and I don-t ever pull
Plants out and I-m always surprised with what comes back each year. I don-t expect it but when it happens yeah! I do plant on fall seed planting this year as well. I have some poppy and some. Pansy seeds I-m going to scatter in a area that is neglected and see what happens

Once again, this was SO helpful! I-m pretty new to cut flowers, but I-ve been so annoyed with most seed packets and other recommendations to plant things that I -know- are cool season flowers. Why do they say to wait until last frost to put these things out? I knew they could go out before then, but wasn-t sure how early. Next year I-ll plan to put these out much earlier.

This was so helpful! I have have been so confused about when to plant out half-hardy flowers, like my snaps. Half hardy implies you don't have to wait until last frost, but many of my half hardy seed packets say to plant out after danger of frost has passed. You're giving me faith to try planting out soon. I'm zone 6b as well and we're already having a very nice spring.

So much great information! Nothing boring on your videos. It looks like a very light covering for your ranunculus. What is it for? I've had mine out in zone 6b under plastic and agribon since 2/6 in a tiny low tunnel over a raised bed. How long do you keep that covering over them? Thank you for all the sharing and please keep it coming. Love to watch them!

I live in Pennsylvania also, in York, and like that what you are talking about pertains to my area too. I see you-re planting out cool flowers, but I-m confused. I thought you found your last frost date 5-1, then counted back 6-8 weeks to plant the seeds. I just started the seeds within the last week, so how do you have plants already to put out?

I know I probably watched this video 10 months ago but I saw the milk jugs - what do you think of that? I am in the same zone and wanted to do some winter sowing of a few flowers. Our beds aren-t ready but you can be I will be planting these beauties this fall! Can you make suggestions for my milk jugs? thanks!

This was so helpful. Thank you for sharing this. I started planting my ranuncs and anemones two weeks ago. They are so leggy and busting out of their trays. But it has been so cold I was afraid I would kill them all. Finishing that this weekend. Looking forward to seeing you follow up on all these spring lovelies.

Danielle- do you harden off the cold hardy annuals? If so how often to you take your seedlings out to acclimate and how long of a period. This will be my first year putting in cold hardy perennials and annuals in the soil prior to my last frost date and wouldn't want to shock my little babies too severely lol.

Thank you for sharing. I started foxgloves from seeds the first time after watching your videos. Mine are not as big but I planted them outside last week. Zone 8b. And I bought the cool flowers book. Would you show us how you sow the foxglove and snapdragon seeds in fall as they are very tiny?

Thank for sharing your knowledge and experience! I am a home gardener in zone 5b (Denver) and I just discovered Lisa Mason Ziegler and I am amazed that this is the time to put out hardy annuaLs in your zone- I see that I am too late for this year but I will be prepared for next year!

I am so jealous of your delphinium seedling! Mine are so tiny! Great video! You are inspiring me to grow more! My yard is pretty shaded so it isn-t easy. I just put my flower plants at friends, work and public spaces I volunteer at and I end up with lots of gorgeous flowers!

I am watching this almost a year later, I received the book last week and just amazed that your soil was ready to receive the seedlings. I am in zone 5b, is it just timing or a combo of prep and raised beds? Have been enjoying your content all through the pandemic.

One more question! I have snapdragons that over-wintered! YAY! I never cut them back before winter. Where do I cut the stems down to, for it to restart growing? If that makes sense? LOL Last year, I pinched them, so the central stem is closer to the ground. Thanks!

Very helpful video. I-m also in zone 6b and only about an hour and a half north of you. I-m new to starting my own flowers and thought I missed my window for sowing poppies so I-m so glad you said you are sowing them this week. That-s what I-ll be doing too!

I have been reading Cool Flowers (based on your recommendation) and can't wait to incorporate the practice into my own garden. I think you do an excellent job explaining the process. Bonus for me. I can just follow your lead as I am also zone 6b. Yay!
