What a wonderful comment from Mr, James: I may not know what I'm doing, but I'm doing it anyway.
What Mr. James is doing is learning as he lives his dream, not unlike Mr. Proenneke. and we see it over and over later on as he reapplies his expertise. Mr. James has obviously read and studied a lot before launching out.
Go from the building of the cabin to the building of the outdoor kitchen to the building of the sauna to the building of the cabin porch and one sees skills transferred. take for instance the shakes or the half or split logs on the porch, the latest structure.
Have any of you noticed that he uses multiple hammers? Very interesting. Can't wait to see the inside of the porch and the furnishings he builds to go there. Always anticipating the next phase, and then I go back and review the past episodes looking for details. GREAT!
None of us have even seen the inside of the sauna since it was completed. but it still must be caulked and the roof completed and. lots, and lots and lots of shows to come!

You'll probably never read this Shawn, not only b/c you get jillions of comments, etc, but also b/c I am commenting on a video from over a year ago. That said, I watched every one of your current videos when I first found you on YouTube, and subsequently watched every new one.
I was looking at the oven one day and thought to myself, Self, do you really know how he built that Forest Kitchen. Answer: I don't remember. Well then Self, watch the whole series again. Which is what I have been doing. I'm now on this one.
I don't know why but somehow the work required on this project seemed to me harder than the whole cabin! It was painstaking. A lot of folks remark on your capacity for hard work, which is profoundly true. What I took away from this project was something else: how patient you are. Most manual labor is repetitious which is why I have avoided it pretty much. I get bored and impatient.
So I am living life vicariously with someone who does not get bored and impatient. Thanks for being you Shawn James.

Sorry about the jealous person that caused you trouble, hope you or police can find the person and cause them some problems. I don't know about your laws, down here they would tell them, that's not nice try not to do this anymore. You are free to go. I dealt with 3 people at work the last job I had before retirement. They will cause you all kinds of trouble. I like the way you nail on shingles, one nail and the next shingle was there ready for the nail, you hit it and the next one was in place ready to be nailed. All the way across the top row, one shingle one nail, NEXT
That was great to watch. Your edits are so good, I know it takes a lot of time. I have not seen any that are better on tv or in movies. Everything you do turns out to be great. Keep working stay safe.

I only mentioned cement because most don't really know how simple and natural it really is to make. Technology has refined the process of course but it is all natural materials so it would be fitting here. I'm sure you have your reasons for building it with cob. I'm curious of your choice over cement though, is it your feeling that cement is not off-grid material or is it because you don't want it permanent or is it the insulation properties of the materials differ or etc? Just wondering. No big deal. Either way it is still pretty cool! :-) after I watched the video to the end it made more sense, you dug it out. Ahh Haa. lol. :-)

We live in Va. Id love to find shakes of the quality that you used. My goodness Id love to find boards of your quality. My house would not have vinyl if I could find clapboards or shakes the quality that you use. Im a wood guy. As a kid 12/16 inch wide boards in Maine were easy to find. Here in Va. not so much. Hard to find clear boards. Keep up the great videos! Love them.

I've watched a number of your videos, and sometimes I'm just trying to figure out where you're going to go from 'there'. I have one question for you. How does your wife feel about your building skills is she amazed when she saw what you build. Please answer this question. Dec 23 2019. I cant seem to do anything right for my wife. I've never had that wow effect on her.
