Those that complain really need to look in the mirror. Apparently they didn't realize how much wood it would take when their house was built or the ones they bought or the furniture they use, how about the computer paper the newspaper the toilet paper the paper towels on and on I really believe that if they realized how many products they use made from wood they would stop and be still. You do a tremendous job and I'm so excited for you and your dream don't let these people tarnish your happiness. How many people are really being able to live their dream and at what cost? Don't allow anyone to get into your head my friend you got this!

The real problem is that you are making this life look so good, more and more people will want to do it. So slowly people will move there. Add that to the fact that people have way too many children than the earth can handle, that place will be a subdivision in 200 years. You only have 30 acres, imagine 30acre blocks for anybody between you and town it wouldn't be long before people subdivide to make money. It's a slippery slope. I'm enjoying your videos but people shouldn't be naive thinking the problem is a few trees on one block of land.

There is no stigma. Youre carefully managing your area with minimal impact. Look at those complaining and I bet they are sitting in their resource heavy houses with every convenience known to man. Where do they think the resources come for their lifestyle? Non-renewable thats where. Shawn youre doing it right and can plug away at some renewal planting as time goes on. Keep doing what youre doing. Cheers!

Most BEAUTIFUL video. Loved seeing dog. Love the ending. Your videos remind me of growing up in foothills of Appalachian Mountains in southern Ohio, USA. I was was First Peoples, learning to live all the land and never taking more than we needed to survive and thrive. My father bought 300 acres of hills paying 5 an acre in around 1943 from the government. We had to buy our land back.

SHAWN, you have almost 1. 5 M subs who like what youre doing and most would love to be doing the same as you but for their own reasons dont. Remember that many are reliving childhood dreams of being a mountain man through you and many more are learning from you. You are inspiring people and your becoming quite a teacher.

I don't think you owe anyone an explanation on what you do with your land. You seem to have a purpose in life, witch many people don't. Keep doing what you do. I for one think it is great. I thought about this same sort of life, 60 years ago but love got in the way. Stay safe

You have to clear the forest to survive, you have to harvest wood to survive, you have to fish to survive, you have to plant to survive; so plant your garden and some tree seedlings nearby and live on. Get back to your goals and survive on.

Shawn, very much like your videos and building skills. Since I have had several golden retrievers over the years, Im wondering how often you are grooming Callie? And where is all the hair that comes with these dogs?
Thanks!

You should definitely add half stam fruit and nut trees. You could plant in such way they are creating a fruit forest in such way you and your family use the inner site and animals use the outside.

Dont worry about cutting down trees, Shawn. By not cutting down trees and clearing out the understory, California burns, year after year now. Keep clearing for the health of your property.
