This week on the homestead, I harvest a black bear, plant the vegetable garden and clean out the root cellar, composting the leftover potatoes and carrots. Not included in this video (but will be next week) is significant progress building the chicken coop. It's really too bad that you don't show your hunts. First headliner on this video is Solo Bear Hunt. That's why I watched it. 15 minutes of garden and raking, 1 minute of Solo Bear hunt. You've mentioned why you don't show it. Squeamish people and animal rights activists. They don't have to watch it if they don't want to. It's part of life. It's how people lived for thousands of years. I sure wish that you'd show your hunts. You'd have a new group of people watching your videos that don't watch now.

Wow what a bear! The owls are so cute. I know they will try to get the chickens but I know your pen will be so thought out. The red cardinal was pretty too. I sit outside and I have 2 and sometimes 3 cardinals come to watch me and 2 bluejays. They share the same tree and they all take a bird bath on the puddle next to the tree. Its so cute. Take care Shawn!

SHAWN & OUR CALI! How are you doing I see your going for Bear now that is great! Planting is hard work for anyone in the World right now ! Am thinking if you don't use the chicken coop for chickens it would be a grand little work shop for you or your wife or even to store things in it!

Never saw carrots stored in a bucket until I saw one of your previous videos. It worked to perfection. I loved the fruit trees in bloom. I loved the footage of the owls. They were beautiful. It looked like the babies were having mice for lunch. I always love seeing Cali too. Congratulations on the bear hunt. It looked like a healthy one.

I was wondering when you might adjust the threads in the beams, looks like they dropped almost an inch. I also stopped eating potatoes but then read two studies by cardiologist that if you boil them for 10 mins, then let them cool, the sugars are dissipated. I love meat but can’t live without some veg, but to each his own.
reply

Maybe I should have payed more attention but I am confused why anyone would stop eating veggies. Spuds and carrots would be our (me 75 wife 72) staple, along with fish and red meat. Actually as we get older we get lazier and now most of our spuds are oven baked chips chucked in the air fryer. Just say'n.

Shawn Shawn go ahead and put the potatoes in the ground somewhere and just let them they will grow back year after year. I realize you don’t want to eat them because of your diet intake changes but if times really get hard at least you will have an optional food source.

Cecil Mead , would carry sand in His Pockets.
He, would murder an Angel , and sprinkle sand all around .
He, did it in front of Men.
They, didn't understand .
No Person , ever helped the Ground.

Congratulations on the bear harvest. Have you ever considered using a kids plastic toboggan to help get your harvests out of the woods I've hunted miles off the roads and trails, and used them often, they make the task much easier. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

What are you going to do when you learn potatoes are not bad for humans and bear, pig, lobsters etc. are bad for people I understand as I was a youth and seemed to always think whatever I thought was complete and right. but age and wisdom come over time. .

Love the video but I would have loved to see more of the bearhunt and it seems like you have done a lot to the chickencoop since last video without filming it. Would have loved seeing that part since your hunting and building is what I like the most

I had forgotten about the metal beams holding up the cabin’s columns! I feel like this is the first time we’ve seen you loosen them but I’m not sure, pretty good future proofing. Congrats on your successful hunt, have a good weekend and take care!

enough calories, but not enough meat You don't have to eat meat every day, do you Eating any meat makes a person ill in the long run.
Nowadays there are sufficient meat substitutes and cheese also provides sufficient proteins in the diet,

That hunt will supply you with many great meal. You have many more items run on power, could you go more in depth on your system, and how much it powers. That would be great. Thank you for the great content of your videos.

Congrats on the bear harvest! It my and my wife's dream do do what you're doing in terms of food. Still a ways out from truly being able to do it though since we rent. But once we retire in 5-6 years it'll be full swing.

My Self Reliance one of the best shows from Canada of a family that lost everything and is surviving in the woods of the great outdoors. I would like to see more interaction with his family. The dog is the star.

Do you know that cooking potatoes and cooling them, before heating again makes them starch resistant This means you get all the nutrients without most of the starch. Don't waste your beautiful potatoes.

Hey Shawn, Nova Scotia proposed a spring Bear pilot project this year, but based on feedback, unfortunately, it won't be established at this time.
Great video. I have been following since the beginning.

That is the most whimsical looking chicken coop I've ever seen - like a gypsy caravan or an elf's house. Love it. When you get grandkids, they will want to evict the chickens and take it over for themselves!

FYI, for those commenting on the why of the bear kill - bear is a important natural, sustainable wild meat and provides more essential fat than any other wild animal. It’s also my favourite meat.
