I finish installing the charred wood ceiling in my off grid log cabin after harvesting a deer, canning it and cutting it into steaks with my wife's help. Kate: In my 75+ yrs as a vegetarian, I tried meat one time. As a teen, I was not impressed. Over the years, I have learned about dietary habits around the world. All I can say is, if you are hungry, enjoy it. Thankfully game was available to our ancestors when they arrived on this continent for substance.
Happy to see your building progress and that your wife will be with you more.
When you went looking for Calli the other day, my heart dropped for a while. You didn't expect her to be up closer. Whew!

Thank you Shawn - I appreciate your consideration for those amongst us who have different views and feelings. I abhor trophy hunting and also those hunts where grouse, raised solely for this purpose, are beaten onto a stand of guns in their hundreds just for the love of killing - probably the most common form of hunting in the UK. That also involves too many wild predators illegally killed to protect the flocks, too. Vast acreage here is depopulated, given over to more or less captive killing for the very wealthy. There is SOME stalking, where the guns creep over the hills under the guidance of a keeper to take a deer - usually guided to a clean kill of the weaker animals - that, I can support.
Too many of us are so distant from the process of food production that we have no idea, and assume that the food we buy is somehow harmlessly killed, when in fact it is still too often much more brutal than your hunting is. And while vegetarian and vegan diets are more common, they are still far too rare for most of the people who cannot bear to see an animal killed cleanly and butchered to be innocent of that kind of harm in our normal food chain. Thant makes me very uncomfortable with most people's sensitivity - have they really checked their own practice? Never use anything which harms living things? In our modern society that is highly unlikely. The only way you can be sure of what you consume is if you make it yourself from very raw materials, and very few of us have the means and time to do that.
I greatly respect your skills and knowledge and would like them to be shared more rather than less. Thank you.

Continuing on with my last comment.
Our home has a propane furnace, stove, and water heater with a 1, 000 gallon tank. 30 years ago we began using wind power, and solar power, with batteries. We have a generator for emergency backup. (We took down the power lines from the house. County officials tried to force us to be hooked up to the power companies power lines, we won our lawsuit. We have a wood burning stove in the house for heat & cooking. The outhouse is in the same spot since 47. Last December the power company shut off all electricity to the area because of a fire in Boulder Colorado, it was an effort to people from using natural gas. It was -40 degrees, New Year s Eve, power was out for 12 hours. We welcomed our cousins and relatives to camp out in our warm home. Several homes had water lines burst. We had plenty of food, heat and places for our large extended family to be with us. We go to the big city once a month for supplies. With the advancement of solar power and led lights we have plenty of electrical power for our needs. I have been using the lessons my Dad taught us 50-60 years ago. We don t go into debt to have the latest and greatest of vehicles or electric devices. A vehicle is used to go between point A and point B. We have learned to use our time better. We plan for the worst and hopefully we are prepared.
We enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Enjoyed watching your video. Growing up in the Mountains of Colorado we raised our own garden, cows, pigs, chickens, & rabbits. We also hunted deer & elk for food. Our parents both went through the depression and knew what hunger was. They vowed to never be hungry again. Mom passed in 09, Dad passed away a year ago at 96 years of age. He instilled in us kids, Get an education. Don t go into debt, live within your means. Buy quality items once. Help your family and those around you that are not as fortunate. We are living on the same 5 acre ground Grandparents bought in 1918. living in the same house my Dad built himself in 1947. Growing a garden in the same spot. We have several cousins and other relatives nearby. Small town of 750 people. We have our own well that was drilled in 52. We still go deer & elk hunting every year, this year my great grandson harvested his 1st elk. He turned 16. When our children, grandchildren, & great grandchildren turned 12 they were allowed to go hunting with us. First they just walked next to us watching and learning what to do. Then when they turned 16 they were allowed to hunt with a rifle. We taught them how to handle a firearm and to shoot at targets.

I saw the most disturbing thing this morning. There's a 300 pg. Addition to your gun bill. Antique, an hunting guns. These people are sick! About 1980 our fishing camp went up for sale. Rainbow Camp on Perrault lake. The road to Red Lake. I was at my parents having dinner an i said, Grandma will you buy Rainbow Csmp for me an Mike? It's 100, 000. Everybody at the table burst out laughing! She said no an I'm so glad because I don't want to live in your country anymore. Not that mines much better. You can shoot a bow if you have to anyway and trap. Beautiful ending as always.

Hi Shawn! I can't thank you enough for all the knowledge and wisdom you're sharing with us!
I just seemed to notice, that in some places, it looked like there were holes in the insulation, like I could see the roof planks (at around 18 to 19 min for example, 50cm behind your head? I'm sure I'm wrong, but if not, then I suppose you left this on purpose? Have you used another type of material there maybe? I'm preparing for insulating my own roof, hence the question.
Thank you so much again for everything, and wish you all the very very best!

Hi Shawn, how do you deal with Cali when she is in heat? Do you keep her locked in the cabin to prevent her from attracting wolves? In any case, she is safer there, left free to grow and move in those wonderful open spaces, than in the streets of a city. Another question: hanging the deer on the porch does not attract wolves or bears? Please excuse my questions, but it is the way I found to participate in your commendable enterprise. Merry Christmas to all of you.

What has always impressed me is your resourcefulness, ingenuity, use of materials, and stewardship of the land where you are living.
Anyone who has spent any time living outdoors understands what, why, how, and when you do what you do, and mostly alone too.
Those who disagree with your life style can disagree as they wish, it's their choice, but until they experience NATURAL living, they can not understand. too bad for them. ;-)

I'm in the hospital, recovering from a heart attack 2 weeks ago while hiking in the french Alps. Your videos are a good moral confort for me. There is a old french song called ma cabane au Canada, your life is a kind of dream for many people enjoying nature. I follow you since the beginning of your first cabin, and I thank you to share us your life and experiences. Take care and to next friday.

OK thanks for the warning I'll catch up later in the build. Don't mind seeing anybody eating meat, just don't like to see the field dressing of an animal, I do eat ground turkey, turkey bacon, all organic. I went to a slaughter house when I was on my Uncles ranch and saw what went on there and that left an negative impression, I was 9
years old and I can't get the vision out of my mind.

I have been a veggie most of my adult life and watched all of your videos and have absolutely no problem watching you provide for your family with your skills, in fact watching you cook up your success as a hunter always looks good! You are an inspiration and if I lived as you do, would almost certainly change from being a veggie. You a great respect for life and nature.

Shawn, I strongly recommend that you stop eating meat, especially beef. Otherwise, you risk becoming a source of meat yourself in the next life for some other meat eater. If it's hard for you to do this, then at least limit yourself to fish and unfertilized eggs. Stop hunting defenseless animals and birds, too. Don't play with fire, then it will be too late to repent.

I know You don't really like the snow because it makes everything monocromic, but I have not seen this much snow that lasts for weeks since I was a kid. I miss it so much. For me it is such a dissapointing winter when it is 10Cdegree all season long and rainy and Christmas is like a spring day. So I enjoy to watch every second of Your snowy winter wonderland.

Love love canned deer. When I was raising my sons and I was down from brain surgery my sons was jr high age n down they take a pint of canned deer meat and make a meal with it. People gave us deer. I was blessed with 7 some years grounded some and canned most. I put canned grounded deer in the crockpot and make a meal. They would make pulled deer sandwiches.

In the cities you can't kill your neighbors & eat them, so move to the wilderness & you can! Sorry but that's my take!
As a child I went hunting with my father & he shot & killed an animal, The Lord spoke to me that man goes into the homes God gave animals to live & man kills them in thier homes! Just saying
