At first I didn t know who was playing fetch, you or Cali. Boy that mill is sure handy, need 4x4 s got em, need 20 2x4 s got em, need a hundred boards, done. I have watched a ton of mill videos and I know it is not easy, flipping those huge logs and running one of them for a day, but the free lumber at your fingertips, is just incredible, those long pine boards are about 15- 20 apiece at our Lowes, just a huge savings, and endless building milling all of your own lumber, you have saved thousands of dollars, just on the outer and interior boards alone, that might be one of the best purchases you have made, all the best to ya sir.

Much respect for all you do. I had a grandfather who built a home when he was 75ys old from the lumber on his land & alot of the building was alone. He had a dog. before this build & a dairy farm 60 head. He fad s dog ( same bread as Callie) Called him Bouncer & was always a boy, when he died got another dog just like it called it the same name etc for many years. Those were the happiest best & smartest dogs. Protected us kids in the woods 100% from bears & snakes & other stuff in the Wisconsin wilderness. Love all you do as it always comes around to bringing up new memories everytime I watch you.

Looks like you could use a nice stiff 'Screen Door' spring to keep the front door closed so you don't need to use the deadbolt just to keep the heat in when you're roaming your 'Estate' with your trusty hound. Have you looked into Aladdin Mantle kero lamps. We had one on our sailboat and it was never turned up more than halfway. Thing put out 100 watts on high, but it was pure, bright white light. Much better for reading or fine work than the yellow flame of the wick lamps. And, are you planning on a 'Smoke House', ala 'Townsend'? Seems like a good way to preserve all that Venison.

I l9ve the fresh side pork bacon. Growing up on the farm we raised pigs and when we had them slaughtered they sliced the bacon nice thick slices you had to slow cook it so it was cooked thru pyt a little salt and pepper snd fix a few eggs. Really good breakfast year round. Also they ground up the meat for sausage and we seasoned it. I still get ground pork at the grocer snd season it myself. Who ever put sugar in country sausage and all the other preservatives. My son said I had spoiled him with our homemade sausage. Now he doesn't like store bought sausage.

I glad to see you using gloves when handling lumber and firewood etc and also a protective face mask and hard hat for milling, but please think of your back when lifting heavy items like those wooden blocks, Shawn. I like that simple wooden bench you built. Perhaps it's time to build yourself a work bench soon too? It nice to see you taking time to play with Cali too.

Dad bought a 40 acre farm between the Maxwells and Conrads in Zionsville IN after WWII, the house was typical and there was an oil stand-alone furnace in the living room and a just-right corner as you have for a rocker and a side door that opened just to allow more heat. I think of it every time I see your writing corner, knowing wonderful writings are in store.

SHAWN & OUR CALI how happy I am to see OUR CALI rolling in the snow! Hearing these things is a delight to mine ears! Burning of the wood is what we did in our basement for our quilt frames and stands! You have a lot of work there but it is DELIGHTFUL WORK TO BE HAD! I thought different and bought a spoon and other things made out of wood today they are awesome!

Is your freezer wood finished out in wood? When the egg yolks are a little bit runny that is a bounus and that is the way I prefer them but I don like runny egg white. I have 14 chickens and I rasie fresh eggs. i eat four eggs a day fri sat and sunday. The rest of the week I only have cream and coffee for breakfast. Man I love your cabin and land.

I have been following you for years now with great interest and also great envy both for the places where you live and for your skills. How long have the logs from which you made the planks matured? use a sling or chain to tie a log to split wood faster and more conveniently. The log will not scatter in all directions, but will stand still, which will allow you to make as many blows on it as you need without removing the ax from your hands
A quick-release solution can be found. a chain with a spring at the end, which has a hook-like end

It is great to see you and Cali interact. She so reminds me of our dog Bailey. Bailey loves playing in the snow and every time we look down there she is with a ball in her mouth ready to have someone throw it for her to retrieve.

If you had a log splitter would you use it? Or do you chop the firewood to get exercise and pull muscles and hurt your back LOL I've always wondered that? You get enough exercise with all the other stuff you do! I hope you get a chance to see this and read it? Be safe been watching you a long time and I still enjoy every video. Tony

I just finished remodeling my bathroom using all hand tools. It took me a little longer, but it was quite satisfying. I have to build a wall to a room that was torn down before I bought this place 30 years ago. Going to tackle that room completely using hand tools. My dad did it this way also. Inspired by him and My Self Reliance.
