I ve ran trot lines since I could walk. You want it tight as possible and you want your hooks to not be on the bottom. Tie each end to a tree or something drove into the ground. Put your weight in the middle. That is the optimal set up for any trot line in any body of water

What we do but we do it on a river u throw night lines out with like ur bait that u use now and just throw it out there. We built ours out of pbc piping and some about 30 pound test fishing line and just threw a big hook on the end so maybe try that and see what u get.

If you want the trot line to work properly youre supposed to have the weight in the middle and hooks going off to every side and have bottles on each end soo the hooks are like floating
