Once you learn to tie this FG knot, you will use it very often. Anytime I know the knot will be in and out of my guides I tie an FG knot. Its not the knot for every single mono to braid connection situation in my opinion, but if I know that knot will be going through my guides I tie an FG knot. Closing an FG is preference I think, everybody has their own method of half hitches and such. Key is, as you said, pull as hard as possible on both mono and braid before cutting the tags. The only time an FG knot can fail is if it's not cinched tightly enough and the wraps slip. Since you usually cut the tags flush on this knot any slipping can cause failure. If your a shade nervous, leave a couple millimeters of mono tag. Great video!

FG knot was my go to for a long time but I've somehow turned from a knot fanatic to someone who rarely ties knots. Using hollow core has become my way of life when it comes to braid to mono or flouro. Being able to make wind on leaders before my trips gives me great variability with loop to loop connections. I have full spools of hollow on my big game reels but on my smaller reels and spinning I will just splice a section of hollow core onto my mainline. It's really a simple way of feeling confident in your connections.

What would you recommend when lure fishing toothy fish like cuda or wahoo, should I tie the steel leader directly to the braid (with a swivel in between of course,
tie a mono shock leader to the braid via FG Knot, THEN tie the steel leader to the end of the mono? I'll be fishing from shore.

Late to the FG party and have been practicing the method in your video and the finger pinch one. Your video perfectly demonstrates how to pull the mono away from the braid to make nice tight coils. Excellent job and thank you for your work. Pretty sure its time to get some merch.

All is good until. After your five half hitches I would use a 5-6 wrap finishing knot that will act like a ramp and make it even smoother basically the end of a Bimini twist then cut your mono off 1/4 long and burn end to make it mushroom.

Ive tried tying this several times now and my leader just slides through the wraps will it only work with heavier braid to mono Im trying to go from 40lb braid to 50lb mono

Less talk, more demonstration, please. I understood that the FG wouldnt hang in the ferrule the first time you said it. The next 34 times were a bit redundant.

Its a great knot i use it but it is not the strongest connection, pr knot and inline splice in holow braid are much stronger also just as slim.

I guess it can also be said that the gt knot will catch in your guides also. The gt knot was tested and is stronger than the fg.

I like the knot, however I still think I'll do a short Bimini twist and then wrap knot with dentil string. I'm just a wee bit Anal.
