My buddy Chris called me the other day and asked if I wanted to come up and fish for Gafftopsail Catfish in Sebastian inlet, Florida. I never pass up an opportunity to tackle a new species for a catch clean cook, especially a so called trash fish! Gafftopsail catfish aka sail cats are generally looked down upon on the fishing community, but these fish have excellent firm fillets and they are some of my favorite fish to eat, believe it or not! I made southern fried catfish, with a lima bean succotash and macaroni and cheese for the boys. Most catfish species have toxic venom in their spines and sail cats are no exception. They are not lethal, but can certainly inflict a painful wound if stung!

I'm glad you do these catch and cook's because people in the US are too spoiled and have too much. What they call trash fish is what normal. people eat around the rest if the world. I bet you when resources are scarce, they will all be too willing to eat the trash fish.
What Americans have the luxury of picking and choosing to eat from the sea is a literal luxary for others they insult by calling our food trash.
Indoor you don't mind, whenever I can, I'll be stealing some of your recipes. I like to catch and cook too.

Okay the first mistake you made was to fillet the catfish before you peel the skin off. Running the blade blade through that slime then the flesh ruins the flavor. Hang the catfish on a hook then cut around the head then peel the skin off with skinners. It will come off in one piece

I remember one day my grandpas friend had caught one and tried to knock it out and the barb went right through his foot. and then I had caught a mud cat and it was my first time catching a catfish and it stuck me in the hand and that b hurts so bad lol lesson learned!

Uhh freshwater catfisher here. I fillet all my fish like this. Catfish, bass, crappie, drum, carp. Its quite a versatile technique when you figure it out, as you've shown on most fish you fillet.

Sail cat is the only saltwater cat I will eat. Interesting fact, they have pearls in their eye sockets and when you dry out the skull the have a crucifix in the skull cavity.

Great vid as always. I actually think those sails taste better then fresh water cats. Used to fish Sebastian all the time. Used to go to FL like 8x a yr, I miss those days

I can catch those all year round at a spot where im at in Fl. they get big too, we have caught like 18lb gafftops. But they are so slimy and gross so choose not to.

Sail cats are great if you catch them on a clean sandy bottom. Had some from the marsh that didn't taste good at all. Corn meal and hot oil.
