Corsair 4000D Airflow Case Review vs. Solid Panel: Thermals, Noise, & Quality

Corsair sent us the 4000D, 4000D Airflow, and 4000X for review. This review looks at the Corsair 4000D and 4000D Airflow thermals, case build quality, noise, and more vs. other PC cases. The sub- 100 case market is starting to populate with quality airflow-oriented cases (after years of us pushing), and the Corsair 4000D Airflow is another to join those ranks. It'll be competing most directly with the Lian Li Lancool 215, Cooler Master TD500, Phanteks P400A, be quiet! Pure Base 500DX, and similar airflow cases. The new Corsair 4000D non-Airflow is also in for review, but unsurprisingly, it's not much of a performer. The 4000X is in for review at another time, assuming there's interest, but we're starting with both the 4000D and 4000D Airflow in this one. Some of the best cases for gaming PC builds right now are in this price class, so it's a good time for the case market.

There's one direction of the case testing that always kinda tweaks me;
Although I get all the stock / standardised and noise directions you take, and the details of your case reviews are definitely appreciated, there always seems to be a gaping hole.
Many of your viewers, you might say a majority, are reasonable or better apt 'enthusiasts builders', and its highly unlikely we will build with just stock fans, or even with the limited standardised number of fans that you use for those tests. We will carefully plan our airflow needs and either buy or pull out of our storage box additional fans to meet those plans. Invariably that means at least a couple more fans than either 'stock' or standardised'.
Its a shame you do not include an 'enthusiast build fan test', as a part of case tests, that maximises fan mount use intelligently; literally as many as prudent fans, following only the best available airflow methodology.
Thats doesn't mean 'just jam it full of fans', but the max fan usage that particular case design allows, for the testing hardware always used, the ceiling being the best possible airflow, which may not mnean filling every fan mount. One methodology suggests that a couple more fans can often mean lower rpm for each fan, which will often mean a quieter rig that performs with better cooling.
Your testing doesnt take this step. We cant see how our more enthusiast level build, might perform in that case.
The impossibility here is of course that any form of comparative statistics regarding total cost and power usage, and possibly noise if you turn them right up ... goes pretty much out the window, and I get that the variability between cases would make for a confusing chart, and an unhappy Steve.
But keep in mind that GN cycles endlessly on building rigs ... your average non pro viewers build ... one computer (or a couple for friends maybe).
That means that we care about our work, and you have us well trained to focus on what matters. For cases thats airflow, so we think 'HOW MUCH can I thoughtfully cool my hardware, in that case over that case? Is there no room for a chart that simply speaks to 'the best fan arrangement we can put in there, heres the comparative test chart'.
Thats what we really wanna know.

Kinda relaxing to hear my purchase of my meshify define C is as good as an overpriced corsair product. Corsair seems to think that reviewers wouldn't downplay the terrible design but lets be honest, they don't really target the budget builders anymore. They wanna get the people with no brains and too much money to care for utility. They have strayed from their original low to middle end builds with reasonable design decisions to this mid to high end builds that take every penny in the customers pocket for a few lights and a black/yellow/white accent while also not providing ergonomics beyond a chinese cloning company does.

It bothers me that USB 3 has been around for like 10 years and after all this time they've managed to skip even trying for legacy support with an included usb 3 to 2 adaptor, rarely bothered to give us 4x USB 3 type A and went straight to removing all but one for the sake of a single type C. It's completely absurd. Hell, many of them just went straight to 2x 3.0 and that's it.
At the very least a standard size case should include 4 USB Type As or 3 Type As and a Type C. Ideally 4x 3.0, 1x Type C and legacy adaptors.

Nice, looks like Corsair made some massive improvements but not perfect. I changed the Spec Delta RGB for the P400D as the Corsair was just shocking on airflow. I like this however same issues stand as the spec delta with the short hight available affecting AIO Cooler placement. With my Vengeance Pro ram not enough space to get the cooler at the top. They need to add some more hight to these cases across the board.

Can anyone ACTUALLY fit a 280 in this case? My msi motherboard has a heatsink that will definitely get in the way and none of these cases seem to say how thick of a radiator they'll support. It looks liek the rear 120 fan is gonna prevent my freezer ii from fitting.
there are so many good cases I can't use because they probably won't fit my hardware and i'm not gonna gamble 100 just to find out =\

literally a 220T on roids, thats all they did here.....
after watching the enitre video, yup do a 220T case vs this, same exact front panel mount, same exact tri fan fron cut out, same 240 and 280MM top support, same psu SHROUD same everything they did nothing but change the size and say it was new, just like tossing rgb at everything

Nice review. This case looks competitive and honestly the biggest thing for me is the aesthetics as it has a very modern and professional look. I'm glad to see they didn't sacrifice performance to achieve that, and at this price I believe this will sell well.

I like it, but... I really wish that front panels had hex or circular patterns. Triangles or weird lines with alternating patterns make the machine look 'trendy', and in my opinion, it may as well look like a Decepticon if they are going that route.

No filter, is an advantage for a few days until the mesh clogs up with dust.....but the dust filter versions would be better over time for convenience of cleaning and look better because the dust isn t all clogged up on the front mesh....

Hi Steve! Love your case reviews!
On topic I need to ask have you seen anything on the aerocool aero one? It's a perforated front panel with 4 fans and controller included and a pretty compelling price, at least here in Europe.
