This tear-down of the Sony PlayStation 5 DualSense controller shows the inner workings of the device, primarily focusing on the cool trigger resistance mechanism. A controller was harmed in the making of this video, but it was worth it. We'll be working on other PS5 content soon. In this video, we're taking apart the DualSense controller to look at Sony's new hardware, including an impressively complex mechanism to provide resistance (sort of like force feedback) at the left and right trigger buttons. The PlayStation 5 controller is the most internally advanced we've ever taken apart.

Sometimes glue is needed to hold a part in place in an assembly line. If the assembly could be done at the lowest cost without the glue then glue would not be included because adding glue adds money. Fighting with a wire to add another part slows down the assembly process, if the wire can be glued down before sending to the next line in the chain can save many hours of assembly time over the long run, The RTX 30 series cards glue on the ribbon cable is a perfect example of that. I would bet the glue is pre-applied to the ribbon cable so the ribbon cable never gets in the way of the next step in the process and is in the correct place when needed. Also glue to hold down parts during assembly has been in use for about 100 years now. I suspect it is permanent.
As for repairing a controller today? It would be cheaper to replace it, they are not made for repairs, it would cost more for the disassembly alone than it would for a new controller, that's not including diagnosis, repair, assembly costs, and at 10 an hour which is a lower pay than a tech would work for. That's a complaint that makes far more sense than glue, making the parts serviceable would also make them easier to create.

I understand some of the thought behind these videos, by why the whole go at it blind when there are guides out there? For example, taking the black part off to reveal the screws is one of the things that was shown afaik a while back. Anyone wanting to actually do disassembly, would look it up online. Heck, to look up your video they'd have to look it up online.
The rest of the video, where you look at part numbers, discuss what you could do to replace it etc. I can get behind. However, for the sake of e-waste (as you yourselves discuss a lot) why not make it less messy and less of a waste ?

That is a worm drive, based on the Archemedes screw. Looks like its changing the angle of rotation and slowing the speed from the motor to the trigger assembly. Worm gears are great in high torque but also have increased friction. What kind of plastic are the gears made out of? The screw should be slightly harder than the gear and a thin coat of lubricant or low friction material on the screw wouldn't be a bad idea.

I wish they'd stop using pots and start using hall effect for the thumbsticks.
I hated it when they said that the controllers are going to have a built in Mic. Oh great, now we're going to see many people with open Mics with the TV up way too loud just like with the Playstation camera but now everyone is going to have them, and I can bet the audio quality is going to be worse that talking with tin cans on a string.

That intro really set the expectations high for a clean tear-down. but no in all seriousness, you're actually really good at this, lot of fun to watch. And gonna be honest (don't tell this to any other tech tubers), out of all tech tubers you guys are probably the most entertaining and funny, a lot of others try to be funny, but they're just not good at it.

That two metal pieces in the haptic feedback motor are so called flextures (or compliant mechanism) basically a type of axial spring (in this form) . Meaning that what was suspended between them was probably a stack of magnets (on second thought probably works just with a metal stack to) . That will be moved by a coil inside the outside housing.

I m a bit surprised that the housing opened relatively easily. Means that in the future, if necessary, you ll be able to replace the battery in the controller. Also battery size is pretty big, that s a good step from Sony too. Overall, really, props to Sony for making it, at least seemingly, kinda repair friendly (if it will come to that).

So, those trigger assemblies are pretty much mini servos (geared motor plus rotary encoder). That's pretty cool. I'd like to try them out now.
They could send pulses of feedback or even adjust the speed and torque by controlling the voltage sent to the motors. I wonder how the software API looks like for those.

Love these videos. Seems like a fairly sensible design that's reasonably user-repairable.
Yes, we got the dremmel out, but there's no way with an internal design like that, the rumble-thingies are definitely something you'd replace as a whole unit.

It looks like when you cut open that rumble motor, it has tracks which allow it to detect what the position is. It's the same system used in electric folding car mirrors that allow it to detect whether it's folded or not and carries the control signal.
