HW News - AMD AGESA Pushes Infinity Clocks, Noctua 2021 Roadmap, NZXT H1 Returns

Hardware news talks about Linus Torvalds' comments about ECC and Intel, Noctua's 2021 roadmap (and passive cooler -- finally), NZXT's H1 return, tariffs and GPU pricing, and more. priit: Didnt I tell everyone that AMD and Nvidia are working together? AMD pushing out the MCM with FPGA is exactly getting the core approach form Nvidia. And Nvidia is getting the high speed interconnect from AMD. The market wont matter when the next gen GPUs launch. RTX30 and RX6000 are already siblings, rather than competition.

Torvalds, as usual, is full of shit on ECC. Even in the server world there has long been a persuasive technical case that ECC is an utter and complete waste of money.
There was a time when various things could result in bit flips but by the DDR2 era, 2005ish, most of those things were no longer an issue. Very few other parts of the computer output enough RF noise at the right frequencies to even possibly cause a bit flip (today there are effectively no such emissions in a computer that is working properly). Consumer electronics laws required that almost everything else that could produce that sort of RF output didn't (those FCC stickers actually mean something). That leaves only one source of a possible bit flipping EMF, cosmic rays. No, I'm not kidding go look it up if you don't believe. So at present your basic DDR4 RAM should, if manufactured properly etc., run without flipping a bit until hit by a high energy photon from a cosmic source. This actually happens more often than you'd expect but still your lone PC can run for months to years, inside a grounded metal case, without having a bit flip error from such.
The situation is different for airplanes, satellites and anything of that sort where cosmic ray strikes a very serious problem, the atmosphere absorbs almost all the cosmic rays that would otherwise reach the surface.

He skipped over the upcoming Q2 black NF-A12x25 detail on that chart, a product being waited for years by every diy builder presently spinning brown fans in otherwise colour coordinated black builds, simply because ... performance matters more. Possibly the most exciting thing on that list for many running the old shiny NH-U12A.
That said, those of us with NH-D15's blacks, remain patiently waiting for a NF-A15 black 140mm version of this high static pressure fan design, yet knowing deep in our hearts that we wont get one until our grandchildren have inherited our computers as relics of a long ago era and the Smithsonian and the Library of Alexandrian level of archaic information storage has this logged as a niche unrequited moment in history.
Such is the Noctua way.

The ECC discussion sounds pretty interesting. If I understand correctly, ECC modules will always cost more because you need extra memory space for parity . So the question is whether ECC is actually worth it for an average or even an enthusiast PC. It might be interesting to design a test where the error rates of ECC vs non-ECC can be compared on a Ryzen and also on a Threadripper board (where presumably the board wouldn't lie). It might even be an interesting question for lower end PCs used in corporate or hospital environments, the vast majority of which use Intel.

Regarding crypto mining. No doubt this is having an affect on availablity. But if you WERE able to get a 3000 series by now, it's a very good chance to offset the cost of the card.
I got a 3070 here in Japan as they are fairly easily available unlike the 3060ti and 3080. Within the first month I have managed to offset the additional cost over the 3060ti. Who knows how long profits will last but for those being forced to pay over MSRP at least they have the opportunity to recoupe that cost with light mining when not using the card.

Cryptocurrency got a HUGE bump last fall and it points directly to the shady flow of political money around the election. Investigators also discovered major bitcoin transactions linked directly to the Jan 6th insurrection in DC. Basically somebody tossed a series of large rocks into the pond last year and it created a bit of an investment storm. Ah, technology. How would we ever launder money without it?

seems like a lot of gamers still don't know about the crypto mining. They think it's the game developers fault ...
that big dip at the end of the crypto value graph, is gamers finding out.
to bad the miners got greedy and got noticed huh?
black and white fans lol #it's a feature

Noctua can get away with just a colour change on the fans because they are top shelf in the category. Granted the brown fans on my NH-D14 look silly compared to the rest of my rig but that damn cooler has seen more CPUs than I can shake a stick at. They are the epitome of quality.

Hey, quick question can we use the Noctua heak sink + fans onto the thermal thank core P3 case? I am looking at the themal tank specs but I don't see where it points to the case height/ Just need to know if the Noctua heak sink with fan will fit when the case is closed. thnx
