Valve Steam Deck Console Specs, LP-DDR5, Price, Release Date vs. Nintendo Switch

Valve's new Steam Deck handheld gaming console has been detailed for specs, price, release date, and software. It's running on AMD. Direct competitor is the Nintendo Switch OLED. The Valve Steam Deck is a follow-up to the previous Steam Pal rumors. The new handheld console is running AMD Zen 2 for the CPU, using a 4C/8T variant, and RDNA2 for the GPU. Our understanding right now is that it's a monolithic die solution. Valve has confirmed LPDDR5 pairing, marking an interesting debut for DDR5 in the gaming space, and has noted three models carrying three different price tags. Release date is December of 2021, but availability will likely be unable to meet demand, as is the case lately. Valve will be opening reservations on July 16th in the afternoon (EST).

This is a major development that could potentially free gamers from running windows if the tech press can manage a balanced coverage. I fear Microsoft will work to sabotage this launch though.
Storage isn't as big an issue as it would be on windows since linux can run fast even on hdd and should be rapid on lpddr5, eMMC is more than fast enough to run the main OS and based on experience with the switch and the psvita newer sdcards are more than fast enough with (early) ssd like performance, they have the iops so game design/packaging isn't an issue other than affecting sd card endurance. Personally I would get the cheapest option and a very fast sd card. But will wait for GN benchmarks :)
As for game compatibility, proton can run pretty much everything at this point 80% of games including ones that dont work on windows 10 and as long as some effort is put into creating a custom proton build the other 20% could work too including anticheat enabled games (assuming devs are on board), so this means it doesn't really matter if developers port games as long as it runs in proton and it looks like valve are doing the heavy lifting to get them running.
Steam OS 3 must be a brand new distribution that probably has little to do with their last iteration. They most likely based it on arch to make it easier to support newer software and customise the system for a mobile platform.
I think a lot of users are going to be pleasantly surprised when they plug in a monitor and realise they can actually get work done without windows interrupting them with updates, ads and crashes. You can probably run blender fairly well on this and would also make for an excellent retroarch system.
Assuming valve doesn't mess this up. (Hoping valve will get FF14 validated under proton with this).

Thank you for bringing up the failed hardware attempts by Steam. So many other videos/ sites are so quick to offer praise for this new bit of hardware (I admit it sounds amazing), but they are all so quick to forget Steams sketchy hardware past... I'll buy in (if I will even have a chance to get one of these which will probably be nigh impossible we bet) after a few months have passed and some good reviews have trickled in.

BIG QUESTION; Are the 256gb & 512gb models actual NVME Drives that are user-removeable, or are they soldered?
If they are NOT soldered, then would that mean that the 64GB model has an unoccupied slot that we could use to install an NVME drive? If so, then that would mean ALOT to us all as I'm sure most of us would just grab the 64GB model and install a 1tb+ nvme drive instead of paying the premium for the other models.

I have no idea why the Steam Link never worked, especially when the price dropped. If I want to play say Rocket League with 3 mates on my living room TV from my PC at the other end of my house, I just press the button on my Steam controller and I'm straight into Big Picture on my 65 TV, no matter what else is happening on that screen. I've never heard of anything as convenient, and it works. Had it since it was launched.

I have a Steam Link sitting next to me taking up space that I never got around to plugging in. (Fortunately I got credit on the Steam store with it that made it effectively worth the same as a sandwich for lunch). I won't be buying hardware from Steam. They just don't do it well, and have a track record of discontinuing what they do bring out.

For me the mobile-phone style pricing on the internal storage makes pre-ordering this a big 'No', and I feel like a lot of people are going to get suckered into ordering the lowest-tier model and then find themselves struggling to run the games they want. Seems like the cheap model's just there to draw false comparisons with the Switch.

Seems Steam OS has some optimizations for Gaming Experience , not just Steam Big Picture runs on Linux. Steam OS was used to atop Debian but we have ArchLinux instead this time. I wonder if the optimizations can be ported to other distros like Nix OS and community can have their Decks run Steam OS with different desktop experience.

Since this is an x86 CPU, I would very much suspect people will get Windows running on it. You might think the memory would be a problem, but LTT found a Chinese computer with an APU using GDDR5 which could run Windows.
This is actually the first device I've seen that makes me wonder if I shouldn't have built a computer.

cant wait for the teardown. I am super interested in seeing if it is possible to install an upgraded SSD to the thing. I can imagine putting a 2TB stick in the thing and being able to actually install a ton of stuff on it. Also, how well it is going to be able to run games off SD cards, thats going to be interesting.

8:21 You mention PCIe gen 4 not being available on the Zen2 platform, but Ryzen 3000 series CPUs do use PCIe gen 4, and don't the consoles, also built on Zen 2 use PCIe gen 4? Or am I misunderstanding what you wanted to say here? Was it more of a Gen 4 is unavailable despite it being on the Zen 2 platform ?
