When Thermal Cameras Shouldn't Be Used (PS5, Xbox, CPU Coolers, & Cases)

Rating: 4.5; Vote: 2
This video explains bad and good testing practices for thermals, on both computer parts and consoles like the PlayStation 5, as well as basic thermal camera concepts for viewers. Please take this video as it's meant to be: An educational piece with some experiments demonstrating when thermal cameras are and aren't useful. It's not meant to be a statement that there's only one way to test things (in fact, we say the opposite in the video -- there are many valid ways to do testing), but certainly there are better ways than IR cameras when trying to drill down to component-level thermals. Our PS5 testing has gotten insane and is due out next week. It's the most extensive console testing we've ever done, so we're excited to share it, but only when it's ready and fully complete. We could have published something sooner, but don't want to rush on this coverage.

Hold up, I agree the doxxing and death threats were uncalled for and those guys need to get their priorities in check. However, he straight up gave false information that was picked up by news outlets and forwarded as the truth. I'm not a hardware guy and even I thought that outcome wasn't definitive with my basic thermodynamics understanding. Someone pointed out the same in comments and he gave some weird reasoning that didn't explain sh t. DF, NXG and even you guys say that wasn't completely accurate and he doesn't even mention that in his followup video or apologize for propagating false info. He has 5+ Million subs, a reach of millions of people, that comes with responsibility, even if you f ck up, the least one could do is own it. LTT messed up recently, and Linus came out and owned it like a responsible person, even though their data said no 'apologies followup video' wouldn't dent their credibility.

A total read out of temp is only useful to be transparent in showing its diffusion to the enviroment. This would only be worrisome if you are concerned about how it affects the temperature of the room the device is placed in. This total temp doesnt directly influence the preformance of the device, but can show if you need to control the enviromental temperature if heat is building up in the room.
If you want to diagnose a temp related issue it only makes sense to record heat being produce directly form the various components of the device.
Ambient temp does affect the efficiency of the devices temp control but it doesnt tell you specifically if or where there maybe an issue

Yeah, Austin wasn't trying to do Sony dirty. He was rushing to get clicks on some new drama. His testing sucks, he should learn why his testing sucks and never do testing like that again. Either do the testing right in the future, or don't do it at all.
All the hate and doxxing and threats are unwarranted, as they always are. I really wish the internet would learn to chill out, stop doing that. It's okay to look at what he did and lost respect/have no respect for him (especially as I'm hearing he refuses to acknowledge his flawed testing methods and apologize for misleading everyone with them). It's not okay to take it to harassment levels.

I added thermal pads behind my 3080's pcb and metal backplate while also changing out the factory thermal pads on the gddr6x memory modules with much better quality ones. Before doing this, the metal backplate would barely get warm during mining or gaming and afterwards, the backplate gets so hot it is almost too hot to touch for longer than a few seconds.
In Austin's world, the old configuration was better because the surface of the GPU was cooler. In reality, the temps of the memory modules decreased by 20c and no longer come close to throttling.

Let's keep it simple. When buying a cpu why is it in most instances always better using a aftermarket cooler or AIO water cooling solution. Same goes for GPU with better cooling components like more copper pipes and fins. So how can a lesser cooler be better? If you take your radiator and down scale it to a third of the size. How would it impact the component it's cooling? It won't destroy the components but it could impact performance/clocks speeds. You already have a issue where the AIO is mounted in a case & how it impacts temps.

I would have rather austin not have responded as he did based on his visual perspective and then double down calling people out on social media and such as he could not admit he was wrong. The team here at gamers nexus is honest. A group of people that want to get the right answer but also admit what they can't do and that is important because no one is perfect and that is fine. I cannot wait to hear what the testing shows in the ps5 video coming up and I hope the truth can be stamped out after this.

But your looking at completely different cases of PCs. In terms of the laws of thermodynamics if the cases and components of the PS5 are the same aside from the heatsink, then there is no way that more heat at the exhaust can be a good thing. It was not an accurate way of measuring, but Austin is absolutely correct that the new PS5 cooling will be slightly worse if every other factor was constant.

Well, that was a learning experience. If you find yourself muttering those words, things have not gone according to plan. As someone who has had my fair share of learning experiences, I feel for Austin. Mine was limited to some unrelenting co-workers who had fun at my expense and made sure the lesson was indeed learned. A learning experience in this medium is brutal.

At work we have a very accurate tool of measuring the power consumption of the systems we build. We just stick our hands in front of the exhaust and take a reading. Converting a scale from uhhh nice to damn, thats warm into watts is the difficult part and is not an exact science. The hand-in-airstream measurement method is perfect though!

Perhaps you shouldn't be the one to speak up and tell people not to harass Austin Evans, at least not until you publicly apologize for doing just that yourself. It would also come off a lot less arrogantly if you would mention that you've done such a thing before and regret it, rather than portraying yourself as just a victim.
