We're looking at the best motherboards for Intel Alder Lake CPUs (12th Gen), focusing on the best Z690 motherboards for the 12900K, 12700K, and 12600K (OC boards, budget, & more). This video looks at a swathe of Intel's current Z690 motherboards and uses internal testing, data, and available online information to try and determine the best motherboards at different price classes. There are a LOT of Z690 motherboards, so we haven't looked at every single one of them; if a particular board isn't on our list, it doesn't necessarily mean it's bad - just that we haven't looked at it yet or don't have it in-hand to make a determination to its quality. The video covers best motherboards for Intel overclocking, cheapest 10GbE motherboard, micro-ATX boards, mini-ITX, best value motherboards for the money, and more. At time of publishing, only the Intel i9-12900K, i7-12700K, and i5-12600K are officially out, so we're evaluating these from the perspective of using those CPUs. Quick correction: The board shown at around 21 minutes is the Z690-G, but the Z690-I is the ITX variant. Sorry for the error on mixing up the two boards. Our apologies for overlooking the form factor on that one.

Intel with the usual price premium making this even more painful as board manufacturers join in. I'd hope for AMD to go with lower pricing for whatever their new platform is but the higher pricing for the 5000 line Ryzen has shown they're no better when leading. I have been wanting to build a new system for over a year and snagged myself a 3070 Ti FE recently. I doubt I'll have a system to put it in for a while.
I honestly feel like I'll just face the headache of a deadend board and go with AM4. DDR5, PCIe gen 5, new CPU lines are all going to make it very expensive in the timeframe I'd be looking at anyway. Looking forward to the AM4 version mentioned here. I was going to watch the video from 2020 but this will greatly help me.

Currently using a z690-f asus gaming wifi mobo. and cant get my ddr5 4800 memory to run past 4000. even with the uefi updated to 0803. ram passed a memtest86, i have no issues gaming. both of my xmp profiles will not boot. the only 2 things i havent tried are using 2 sticks instead of 4 and manually tuning myself. from what ive looked up it seems like a common issue that hasnt been publicly addressed by companies other than a uefi update. ill eventually manual tune it but just going to run it while its stable, much better than the ddr3 1600 i was running before. good luck to you and your build!

Just an update to the video: For people looking for a less expensive motherboard without a wifi, asus prime z690-a is recommended as it has ddr5 ram pcie gen4 compatibility, tonnes of usb 3.2 gen2 and gen2.2 and also usb type c of both gen at tue back with digital audio out. The win win for me is 16+1 drmos so at least 12700k should not have any issues sucking huge power. Also has at least 4 pcie slota onboard (only 1 is gen4) with heat sink for 3 of them and also 2 pump headers and connectors for the asus aura sync rgb. Price < 300. Hope this helps.

I bought the
Gigabyte Aorus Elite AX ddr4 mobo. Here is what I can say. The bios out of the box was old and did not recognize any m.2 sad that I installed. It needed a bios flash update from their website before installing windows. Then the XMP profile was completely broken. I run 32GB at 3200MT/s and I had to manually overclock the memory to reach those speeds. The on board XMP profile caused my PC to crash when I would play any game after about 10 minutes. It s a good board but it didn t really work out of the box.

I have to look at bios when shopping for a new board. Z690 Gigabyte is bad. Their x570 lineup was constantly behind the curve and bad as well. I tried both the aourus elite ddr4 and msi edg ddr4. Msi boots 4000cl16 ram on gear 1. Still havent had a single crash. The aourus was impossible to even boot my 3800 kit and i had to downclock to 3600. Asus and Msi are clear winners for ram stability in recent years.

Still waiting for that DDR5 , until i can get my hands on them i'm not gonna buy anything that are soon likely to drop in price, the exception would be the CPU i guess but it doesn't feel right to have a CPU just sitting in some box, also i'm curious what AMD will come up with, Intel sponsoring the Chinese olympics made me seriously consider getting AMD for the first time in 20 years.

i accidetally drop processor ontop mainboard cpu pin, the mainboard is MSI Pro Z690-A DDR4. thank god by using microscope lcd, i successfully re-arrange those lga 1700 pin, and cpu get recognized again..., i hope there is a mainboard that has more resistant to this accident. the board already up for 7 days, 24 hours without a problem. i hope there is no problem in the future...

Very disappointed with the ITX offerings at this point -- fraught with being unable to fit coolers, and the Aorus board's reviews are atrocious for compatibility and just outright functioning (but the asus board is 450 or more, plus the DDR5 tax and lack)... I desperately want to get into ITX with an open air build, but it's a massive hurry up and wait

I'm happy to see my MB there (MSI Carbon). Too bad that the only DDR5 that counts (6000+) has a price of 750 British POUNDS at the retailers in London. A disgrace... So I'll stick with the Z690 DDR4 'till even retailers will stop being scalpers!
P.S. I use a Z690 A PRO for the DDR4 and so far, its easy to occ the 12900K to 5.1

Would it be possible to do a full z690 ddr4 video? Lots of arguments out there over the memory compatibility RE: overclocking etc as well as nvme issues. I've been looking at the top featured one from Asus the z690-a gaming wifi d4. It's so popular that it's effing sold out everywhere. Thanks again for your hard work!
