I don't think it's worth it or even good to have components that powerful in consumer-level PCs. I know the 3090ti is not going to be the card must of us will have in the near future, but maybe in 10 years it will be somewhat normal to see such power hungry cards in mid tier rigs and, to be honest, that scares me. I'm thinking of the environment here but i don't even know where to put my line as to what I consider OK and what is excessive. However, I just think it's wrong for us to keep pushing the limits just for the lols. We should demand game developers and software developers in general to make more optimized programs that can perform just as good or even better without the need for more power hungry PCs.

Here's to hoping the next generation GPUs from both companies will return to reasonable value for their line-ups and that market prices won't be driving into oblivion by scalpers and low supply so I can nap myself a nice xx80/x800 equivalent at hopefully around 600-700 MSRP. If that is an empty dream I can only hope that Intel is seeing the consumer frustrations and decides not to just hop into selling overpriced stuff and instead goes swinging into the market at lower prices (i.e.: reasonable) to get a foothold.
Now if you'll excuse me, I've gotta source a goat or something to ritually sacrifice in order for any of that to happen ...

Hey Steve,
since you talked about using Unreal Engine and the VRAM value for that kind of application in this video, I have a quick question:
Because of pricing I'm only in the market for a 3060 12GB or a 3060TI 8GB for my new rig, which I want to use (in part) for UE5 stuff. Would the overall way stronger 3060TI still be the better option here, despite having 4GB less VRAM than the 3060?
I can't find useful information about this anywhere. Obviously most people who want to do stuff like this get higher end cards, but since it's only a hobby for me I can't justify anything more expensive...
Thanks for reading!

For all the talk about power consumption (which is only slightly higher than the top tier 3090s were already doing), what is really impressive to me is that this card runs the memory much cooler than the 3090 did. Having the memory on only one side of the card seems to make a huge difference.

If 500w GPUs finds it s way down to 3070/3080 level, this will be cause for concern, given rising energy costs/the carbon effect. As a consumer, I couldn t justify 1. The entry cost of buying the GPUs given the current pricing trends and 2. The energy cost and the affect it will have on the planet.

I noticed that you left out Ray tracing and dlss benchmarks. Remember that the different Nvidia skews also have different amounts of ray tracing and tensor cores. It would probably be sufficient to have 1 title with full ray tracing to compare rasturized vs traced vs dlss performance(4 lines).

Oh boy, a GPU literally only designed for people who panic bought an RTX 3090 and a giant power supply from EVGA within the last 90 days to step up to for like 200 bucks because it's actually cheaper with the memory on the front than buying a water-cooled backplate for the rear memory.

You've hit the nail on the head with that comment about knowing the market will just buy the more expensive option if stock is available, that technique clearly sold a boat load of 3090's to people that really only wanted a 3080 but got sick of waiting and watching prices rise

This card is ridiculous. This is the theater of the absurd that Nvidia is showing us today. 8 to 12% for 33% more money is criminal. Unfortunately there will be brainwashed people that will buy every single one of these so Nvidia will never learn this lesson.
