Ranting About Power Supply Myths, ft. Jonny Guru

video description

Rating: 4.5; Vote: 2
We met with former PSU reviewer Jonny Guru to talk about common misconceptions and myths about power supplies, including tier lists, modular cable standards, marketing, and more. This video was filmed at Corsair's lab just before our Newegg trip, featuring Jon Gerow of power supply R&D at Corsair (GN paid all travel expenses for itself). We talked about power supply tier lists, problems with standardizing modular cables, marketing BS about fans, full bridge rectifiers, 80 Plus Certification, and more. This is an educational piece that should help everyone learn more about power supplies for computers, including how to find the best PSUs in 2022 (and onward) and what specs are best for a power supply for a PC build.

Another reason why they can't agree on standardizing modular cables is because everyone wants THEIR to be the standard and everyone else to change, also none of the established big brands is ever going to switch to a competitors cable system even if it was technically better since that would give the company whose customers didn't have to discard their cables a big PR coup!
And the reality is that they're pretty much all different but equivivalent though each manufacturer of course think theirs is better (and it is - for them).
So the only option would be a new incompatible standard (ref:xkcd) by an non-involved party (or a trade association they're all member of) so that everyone would be equal - but then there's no immediate benefits for the manufacturer - just the customers...

I'm building my PCs from Voodoo 1 days. And 2 decades ago, there weren't any outlets testing power supplies. One electrical engineer once said to me, if you have two PSU, same power, all being equal, the heavier is usually better. He explained to me, why the heavier is better, and it was not because of heatsinks, and his logic was sound but don't remember exactly his words (bigger or better capacitors are/were heavier?). I was following his advice up to around 2010 and only very few failed, considering I was building PCs for my friends too. From 2010 I stopped building for my friends and some testing/reliability data came out.

In case there is a follow-up, Why do they use so stiff heatshrinks on the corsair line up? Specifically the RM850x 2021. It is almost impossible to make a close bend.
Everything quality wise is pretty good, but it ruins the building experience trying to route these cables.
On a more technical note, what is the air temperature PSUs are tested? Most server/WS builds tend to have the PSU pulling air from inside the case. Are we safe with air temp going up to 50C?
Mostly concerned about the new GPU lines pulling power like crazy.

Two people I know have both totally or partially destroyed parts because of they thought cables where standardized.Great video. I was about to write a few thing you should have asked about. And as I got to the end of the line. You did. :) Next time I'll get to the end of video first, less typing that needs to be removed again as I got the answer.... :)That sticker with To be used with Corsairs TYPE4 or whatever is that a new thing? I have like 4->6 Corsairs and I can't remember to have seen it on anyone

I don't give a s it about their excuses for not using 1:1 pinouts. I thought you were making the product for the user? Not only is it dangerous and EXPENSIVE for users and their hardware if they don't know this, but for those who do, buying the correct replacement cables is EXPENSIVE or hard to find. I think everyone would rather pay a few extra dollars for the peace of mind so you can keep your damn penny pinching profits. When you blow up your hardware, only the manufacturers profit.

the biggest thing that i've had issues with is when i spec'd out a system for a friend of mine, others chimed in and said I would have went with a higher wattage or I don't know if that's sufficient
For reference the system was:
R7 5800X
32 GB DDR4 3200 2 x 16 GB
RX 6600
600W 80+ Bronze PSU.
PC Partpicker puts the estimate at 366 watts. I consider this to be the sweet spot of this PSU's efficiency. Over specing would reduce efficiency if i'm not mistaken.

When I built my workstation, I just wanted to know which PSU had the most accurate, stable voltages and the least amount of ripple.
The result of my research made me cry a little, because there was such huge gap between Corsair's 1600i and pretty much everything else. That fact and the 1600i's price tag.
But once that big boi was mounted inside the case, I already felt much better about the decision. Expensive electronics and cheap psus just don't mix.

Why is it not a straight pass through cable? Make both ends of a cable a pcie plug... and wired to be such so it doesn't matter which end you plug in to the PSU or what brand of everything is involved it's all wired for straight passed through connections. Still don't see how this was a difficult idea and why a power supply needs to have different pinouts on the power supply side versus the end of the device taking the power.

what is that talk about a full bridge rectification ????
there are no switch mode power supplys without a full bridge rectifier on the mains side for use as a PC power supply .. (also they are usually not mosfets)
- im afraid we are missing some important context for that here .. is he talking about a full bridge converter .. like an H-bridge? (totally different thing) :>

reply

Never heard anyone talking so.much BS without saying anything at all.
The question was: Why can t you mix cables?
Answer (veeeeeeeeeery long): It might fit in one end but not another
- But What if both ends are the same? Why is it important (spoiler: it is).
This guy is rambling out of his ass. Trying to sound knowledgable.
