Announcing Our New Project & Soldering Mat GN 'Flux' Silicone Mat

Rating: 3.5; Vote: 2
Our new 'Flux' Mat uses a high-quality material for all kinds of projects, ranging from model building to board repair and soldering. The mat is extremely heat resistant, including to soldering irons, and also very easy to clean of adhesives, flux, tinning materials, and other project debris. These new mats are 32 x 16 and join our Modmats in providing work surfaces for electronics enthusiasts and professionals. GN team members have been using these for small car and bike part cleaning, electronics repair, and more for a long time now, and it's time to release them for our viewers! This also directly helps fund our benchmarking and reporting! Dale: Man, I was just thinking wow, I really wish I had an 800x400mm soldering mat, that's about all the space I have if I move my mouse and keyboard from my desk station and use my main monitor as a microscope display , and then I see this video. No seriously, I literally need one almost exactly that size, it will fit perfectly on top of my LTT 900x400mm deskpad without having to shove the corners under my compressible foam speaker risers like I did on it. Y'all nailed it with this thing LOL

How resistant is it to automotive chemistry?
This could be useful to use in disassembly of car parts, however ive seen silicone mats that are damaged by certain types of chemicals due to being either low quality cheap silicone (could been just marketed as silicone when it wasnt) crap or just not made to be resistant to certain compounds.
Also how easy is it to stain, as most silicone is porous and only special use one (medical and ect) is made to not be porous to not grow bacteria

Been using a medium modmat as a GPU modding surface... Which includes soldering.
Can confirm, flux will stain a modmat, and it will not stand up to direct soldering iron droppage (or large solder hailstones). I know, I'm using the wrong tool for the right job. Right thinking people, buy a GN Project Mat!
But, it is flat, so lives in the middle of a 3-layer sandwich of IKEA _finest_ desktop, modmat filling, and GN mousepad (naturally).

Was really looking forward to getting one of these, but alas, the moment I put my Western Australian address in, the price doubled :( 100USD is approx 150AUD, as nice as the product would be, and I love the size, I just don't think it is worth that much.
I've always been wanting to buy stuff off the store, but the shipping is the killer, and the lack of larger sizes for the desk mats.

A functionality request: while it isn't a GN color, a lot of hobby and professional mats for small, fiddly tasks (i.e. watch repair, model assembly) are made in a specific range of green colors for reduced eye fatigue, especially with bright task lighting and under a magnifying lens. That's the only thing I would change to make this functionally perfect in every way I can think of.

Exactly how heat resistant is it? You say a soldering iron is fine but you can run a soldering iron at a very wide range of temperatures.
If you're using leaded solder you can run it at just 220c, but when I was soldering, I was usually keeping it between 380-400c.
As there's no exact numbers on your store page I'm asking the question here.

So no info on ESD ratings. I don't see a place to ground it. Would sure be nice if you made a proper ESD dissipative version, maybe nitrile or neoprene? Or maybe even a carbon coating on the back and some snaps for grounding?
Also, how about some dimensions on the difference sections? Like how big is the main work area (with the GN logo)?

Hey GN.
I love your merch, but living in the EU, the shipping cost is prohibitive. I wanted to buy your new solder mat + the classic anti-static mat (big one), but shipping is close to 70USD to ship to France, it's a solid 3rd of the cost in shipping :-(
Any change of a future change regarding those costs?

I just bought a bunch of stuff to show my appreciation for the quality of content you have provided me for a decade now. I really love the new Mat you have really put in the work to make this product I can tell by just looking at the size of this. Thank you and I hope you dont have to rely on advertisers anymore.

I have to say that is a good price especially for the size of the mat. Definitely going to snag one myself. Been looking for a larger mat like this actually, just haven't pulled the trigger because most aren't as big or have the extra well thought out moulding this has, nice job guys.

I hope you've fired off a couple or three to Roman; Vice; and BZ for review; I love Jay and can tolerate Linus; but I wouldn't trust them to review this properly. It isn't bubblegum enough. I miss seeing Snowflake so this vid gets 13 out of 10 from me. I'll place an order in the morning.

I legit just finished my High Grade GM Ground Type and am in progress on a Real Grade God Gundam, I feel like this is a sign lol fixes a lot of annoyances with my current setup
Also looks great for miniature painting, plus I ve needed a space to practice soldering so much utility

Whelp picked one up as well as finally snagging a mod mat since my job has changed and I no longer have easy access to and ESD safe surface.
For those wondering both of these products are not only competitive to professional products but in many cases are better than them!

Love this Steve, you guys did a great job designing this product! Your store is building quite an amazing assortment of really high quality products, and I can't wait to see what else you guys come up with in the future! I love your mod mats too!

If possible I would be willing to pay an additional premium for a logo-free version of this. I like to keep things as minimalistic and subtle as possible, so I like to buy hardware/tools with little to no branding, or removeable branding.
