AMD Almost Learned Something: RX 7600 Reference Card Tear-Down

In this video, we go on an expedition to try and find the value of the RX 7600 by tearing down the AMD reference model card. This 300 - no, 270 - no, soon 250. Wait, maybe 200? video card will eventually make sense, maybe, so if it ever does, at least you'll know how it's assembled.

I sure hope AMD gets their act together on graphics card performance. I have always used their processors since the first one in my 486, and never had a problem with one. I liked supporting them just for being a pipsqueak going up against the giant intel, and for as big as the difference they did much better than one could hope for at a better price, and delivered great reliable processors. Their Linux Support is already way better than NVIDIA's, and with intel in the game if they don't suddenly just bow out, it could get interesting, and be better on our wallets. I wouldn't mind if others come up with some new wicked tech and competed in the graphics card market.

More heat can come out the back of a board usually, unless they are special components that can be top side cooled. Reason being the path between the component and the back of the board is primarily copper typically(vias), while the top of the component is plastic.
At least for MOSFETs, may be different for memory modules since a FET has 100% connectivity between the back of the component and the rear outside layer of the board, and a memory module is mostly making connections to different internal layers and not going all the way through.

I really like that you guys are self funded, and have purchased a few of your products. One suggestion, if youre going to do an infomercial for the product during the teardown, could you refrain from putting a pre-roll ad for the same thing? its not a huge thing, but i watch your videos while gaming or working on other things. When i hear the same ad, i leave the video thinking its one ive already seen. That might just be my add overthinking it, but i love the work and keep the videos coming.

Honestly, AMD should just stop making their own boards and leave it entirely to the board partners. Just focus their resources on production and supply of the chips. They can still have validation in place for board partners without actually making their own AMD branded boards. It would be interesting to see the opposite approach of Nvidia. Who actually manufactures AMD branded GPUs these days? And last but not least, did you ever find out why EVGA didn't just switch to AMD?

Not trying to defend bad card releases, but people keep getting overly caught up on the 1060 price. In 2016 when the 1060 released, 250 was rhe equivalent of 320 today. Then you compound the fact that these new cards have better designed coolers with better materials. Its kind of apparent why they cost more.
Remember, I'm nor defending or saying theyre good products. Just sayinf there are logical reasons as to why they cost more.

Should've added an extra heatpipe and some more surface area in the actual cooler. Two isn't great for a 165W TDP chip and would've helped a lot in transfering heat to the fin stack. The cost would be negligible to the overall BOM.
The design looks good though. The only other thing I would change in the fins orientation and have it stacked sideways to let the fans push the heat out of the system on one side.

I kind of like how it looks like you can put it back together without the shroud and fans if you wanted to try to build a passive cooling build or strap your own fans on there haha. But really looks very serviceable, fans look very easily replaceable even looked like you could replace each fan separately instead of needing to do both. Will be interested to see the thermals.

Still find it hard to believe the reluctant but all I could find/afford vanilla 12gb 3060 is almost looking good vs overpriced 4060ti's & 8gb alternates at the same price!
Unsure how the Arc does on likes of rpcs3,pcx2,& other 8bit/16bit emulators,ScummVM & if Intel will stick it out in the market!
Miss the days midrange gpu's would last you a few years!

ive only ever used nvidia gpus but honestly im impressed with amd's price to performance with the 7600. i know its not some god tier gpu but the price is right. i think its a great gpu for the price and it looks great, simple yet effective. if i was building a pc right now on a budget id be hard pressed to find a better deal.

Good to see a simple 2-fan design on a GPU from AMD unlike aaaall the other Nvidia ones we ve seen which have needed a 3-fan, 3.5-4 slot design for a 200watt GPU Ummm .. did I miss something . That thing was sooo tin I didn t see a GPU under that 4060Ti shroud .. Nvidia must of made such a tiny GPU inside that thing

At 220 it would be a great card, but honestly I would still skip it and look into buying an RX 7700 (XT) (hopefully for less than 400 ) since I'm more inclined to move to a solid 1440p experience, rather than being forced to 1080p or dial down the graphics a lot due to the vram constraints.

Do you have to reapply new thermal past to older cards like the GTX 780? Today since its over 6-7 years old now. I have a Galax GTX780 HOF that i havent turned on in years now. But i plan to stsrt using my old build again now thst i can use computers again since i got my own apartment now.

The fact that Nvidia actively wants to be like Apple is causing me to look elsewhere with my wallet. The only reason you would aspire to be one of the most evil, anti-consumer companies in the world is because you want their profit margins. This is not a company I want to support with my money.

Everything looks fitting for a 200 card, no major surprises here. B.t.w, Steve, are you planning on doing more pre-built system reviews? I really miss those and I'd enjoy seeing more of them, even the reviews of systems that are actually built well and don't have amusingly bad flaws.

Honestly I like the very simple, not invent the wheel solution here (cooler and pcb form factor). If it's not some new breakthrough technology, I'd rather have it like this and reduce cost to the consumer (if they plan on making it cheaper for the consumer, not only for themself).
