Sponsor: Corsair's Hydro X Water Line on Amazon This review of the Intel Ghost Canyon NUC and Compute Element heavily focuses on thermals, acoustics (noise levels, and splashes some gaming performance and production workloads in. For the review, we're tearing-down the Intel Ghost Canyon NUC, featuring an Intel i9-9980HK Compute Element with RTX 2070 for the discrete GPU. Heavy focus is given to system build quality and component selection, as the system attempts to achieve a smaller total system size than what's typically possible with mini-ITX motherboards and components. The previous Hades Canyon NUC used a unique combination of Intel and AMD silicon, part of the Kaby Lake G line, and also offered especially fun overclocking when combined with custom water cooling. It was completely impractical, but enjoyable as an enthusiast endeavor. The new Ghost Canyon NUC loses that silicon originality, instead leaving the GPU door open for user selection. It's sold as kits or as just the Compute Element (the CPU card, basically, and there's potential for future unique ATX-sized builds with the mini-PC in the same enclosure. Grab a GN Medium Modmat here: Value isn't particularly good on these parts for anyone used to DIY system building. This is low manufacturing volume and doesn't benefit as greatly from economies of scale, but it's also all custom-sized, proprietary form factor components that don't come cheap since they don't already exist en masse. The end result is a very specific, very niche product with high build quality, but which has some clear downsides. I would like something along these lines to become the new form factor for PCs. It's a more efficient use of space which I personally really like, doesn't need to solely use a single-piece compute element either. Mini-itx sized motherboard which you install your cpu+ram+m. 2 drives which slots into or connects to a baseboard for PCIE slots. Motherboard size is now 100% standard, if you want extra features it's integrated into the case's baseboard. Need more PCIE slots? Buy a wider case that has a larger baseboard. Want Sata drives? Longer case which has drive bays+basboard has SATA connectors. It'd require compact and efficient cooling because most engineers just assume that there's gonna be tons of empty space for airflow and it definitely would be more expensive+complicated to engineer but this is my ideal perfect solution that I have constructed in my head and I want it. Just a big old dense brick of modular computer.

Maybe a smaller Graphics card could help thermals. Such as a smaller RTX 2070 etc like the mini ITX RTX 2070 by Gigabyte if this PC can handle smaller ITX GPUs for that matter. Heck ever an Zotac RTX 2070 mini might work better than the ASUS card because of having the area to exhaust the hot air out the back. If you have any ITX 2070 cards you could try those in this and see if this helps any. Also installing a 2080 Ti is very interesting in my mind because I was wondering how much of a bottleneck a high end mobile chip would have with a 2080 Ti. If I were purchasing one I would purchase an ITX 2070 or 2070 super to see if this PC could support it and try to improve thermals. Also I would try an apply Liquid metal to the CPU to see if it would improve temps if like at all.

INTEL should better have reversed the Compute Element by placing the components on the other side of the card, so each fan would have blown towards opposite sides of the case. i know this would be a very untraditional way to place components, but in the case of this specific NUC system, that would make much better sense thermically speacking maybe some vendor could make a still less orthodox solutions by doing a base card where the compute element could be placed in reverse, the connectors of the GPU would be on the front of the case but thermals would be much better.

My use case would be as a complete in home media replacement. I built my partner an a300w w/ 2200g build a while back and she loves it more than I hoped she would. I expected that she would generally stick to her laptop, but she loves the increased productivity of desktop monitors and parts. I've realized that I prefer emulation over new games and like to play in different parts of the house. Moving the a300w around with a small monitor is a breeze compared to my node 202, and is capable of more than my thinkpad. I'll probably build my own though. like a velka.

This is not what NUC's are about for me, these are just small gaming PC's, not interested at all. A gaming rig is allowed to be big, no point fighting physics with small cases. My truly small NUC is some of the best money I ever spent, though. The ultimate smart TV extension is still a small windows 10 machine. I can dual boot to Kodi, but after a while I just didn't bother anymore. I would totally love a stripped down Windows with just explorer, a task bar, some networking and security and zero applications.

As an answer to who is this for? It s for live streamers who are also music producers. Have your 1000d or enthoo elite or 719 with the ATX and ITX builds in them and slot this thing into the main atx board and load Mac OS into it and boom all in one system you have your gaming/workstation rig, your streaming rig and your music workstation all in a single enclosure. Obviously that s a super niche use case but I happen to be that one of few people that would find this super useful and practical

I'm a bit disappointed to see the NUC go this direction. I use one of those tiny 7th gen NUCs as a perfect low power tiny home server running ESXi. The tiny thing has 64GB of RAM, a 1TB Samsung 960 pro, and a 2TB 2. 5 hdd. It can comfortably fit 4-16 VM's. This thing is too big and too confused in its delivery. It's an extremely overpriced and underpowered desktop replacement, but it's too big and too expensive to be a good home server alternative to a stack of Pi's. Who is this targeted at?

I watched Linus tear one down. Wasn't bad yet did seem it was all more laptop sided yet his was just unboxing and tear down. Didn't get into anymore than that. Guess I am old school as I don't really care about fan noise as back when I started doing my own builds only had one speed. Full Speed. I still do miss my Gen 1 duel Xeon build Other that BS drivers it worked great for games. Hardly any lag on a 10MB connections at the time and very little on dial up. Damn I am dating myself on this.

My use case for this is that I'm an indie game developer, and I'd love it as a secondary system for testing multiplayer and performance testing. The appeal is that it's small enough to keep on my desk without any trouble, and it would be nice and easy to swap out and test different graphics cards. The only problem for me is the price, sadly. I reckon it's about double what you could build a similar Mini-ITX system for, and that makes it very difficult to justify.

This particularly appeals to me, as a truck driving gamer. I have been and currently use a custom built gaming laptop as my PC solution while on the road. This includes tear down and build up every day I want to utilize my pc. Would this NUC form factor, or the cooler master, be a successful always on replacement for a laptop in a somewhat uncontrollable atmosphere. I am talking towards dust, vibration, and hvac limitations. Thanx!
