We Built a 250,000 Sound Chamber for Testing Hemi-Anechoic Chamber Build Vlog, Pt. 1

This 3-part video series shows you the construction of our hemi-anechoic sound chamber, including technical discussion with David Engdall from Viking Enterprises, Inc (the company assembling the chamber). We've already deployed this chamber for our Fractal Terra review with our upcoming ITX reviews we're excited to launch and we've done testing with the ASUS ROG Ally for our benchmarks. It's an exciting time and we're thrilled to already put this to work, especially because noise testing was the one aspect slowing us down on fan review progress. The second part will show validation and results of the chamber and the third will show exterior setup. Check back soon for the first use!

I really hope you will use this for something actually useful like testing laptops, specifically the acoustic properties of their fans. Unlike PCs, you can't just go and buy more quiet 120mm fan from billions of various brands , you are basically forever stuck with stock fans, and it's very important to know about laptop fan's acoustic properties before buying laptop because it's not always convenient or possible to return whole laptop for full refund if you won't like its acoustic properties. Same goes for the built-in speakers in laptops (it's useful to know their acoustic properties for all people who do not want to rely on external speakers).

I am almost 40 years old and am not excited easily. But when I heard Mike Chin's name that I used to read back in '04 (trying to tame my P4 prescott) and the anechoic chamber I couldnt help but get a big smile on my face. Imho, when you consult people like Aris and Mike, I know that the result will be the best out there.
PS Potential content: There was a study like 10 or more years ago about the effects of various fan grills and how they affect the noise profile of a fan. I would like to see a roundup that would validate different manufacturer's case grill shapes and how they compare (bet that Fractals logo cut out will be the worse)

Make sense.
Now that the same CPU is released 3 times under 3 different names, and new GPU comes out every 3 years in a tic-tac system adding features or performance every other cycle.
You have a long time between relevant releases and you need something to do in-between.
Now we can finely find out what GPU that makes the least noise, and maybe we can find a DIY solution to coil whine.
How much louder is a RGB fan for the same price as a silened fan?
How loud is cherry blue switches?
Who makes the most silenced gaming chair?
and so on. I cannot wait.

Hope every tech company out there is taking notes. GAMERS NEXUS IS GROWING SO WELL BECAUSE OF THEIR HIGH STANDARDS. It's a legitimate market strategy to be the good guy. Even if you can't compete on price, even if other companies beat you to the punch sometimes, trust is the premier resource for brands and companies in an ecosystem where consumers are fed up with the economy and the corporations running it. Keep up the great work Gamers Nexus, you're not only doing the right thing, but also building a robust foundation for the future, best wishes to you all .

I love this semi silent competition between GN and LMG to build these crazy testing facilities. Independant testing of consumer products is all we have to keep big corpos from going to the dark side, to know when they do and hold them accountable. No amount of online reviews can match that value and I'm glad to see 2 of the most recognizable names in tech media stepping up. Sure, theyll make money for their content, but there is easier cheaper content out there that makes more money, and these people chose to do this, and i applaud it whole heartedly.

As someone who just built a computer I had a hard time finding a resource I trust regarding fans. I rewatched your fan tester unboxing and wondered whatever happened with that.
Now I am looking forward to some content regarding fans that is actually good. I ended up with two noctua nf a12x25, two toughfan pro's 14cm, and two arctic p14 a-rgb (which I got for free).
But the amount of research I had to do to make sure I got something worth the money was simply too much. With the CPU cooler I could just go to your review and decide to buy it.

Anyone who doesn't take GN seriously with their testing and recommendations is a fool, and this is proof of that. Your attention to detail and quality reporting is exactly why I'm here. Also appreciate that you're not for sale, even when you have something that you could reasonably offer without it compromising your ethics even the possibility that someone might suggest that it could keeps you from doing it. That speaks louder than any CFO from a company whose name rhymes with Horsehair.

I understand that it's a GN thing with testing in general at least you do it right, but I'll be honest here and say it's completely overkill.
I know there are people that are into a very quiet environment for studio PC's etc, but generally I'd say 95% of us do not care about the sound at all so long as it's not coil whine or abusive so a normal gaming rig with fan noise etc is totally fine.
Still I'll keep an eye on what data this provides, maybe it'll change my mind.

I guess he gets a lot of those questions on jobs, even though you should already have done your homework well before you have it installed, but still, but i guess it's not so much free advertisement of how good they are, but also shows why you should do or need certain things, which a lot of people don't get or think of and that they know their shit etc. I doubt they'll sell a lot more extra chambers because of the video, just because the market is relatively small i'm guessing.

I work in special Hazards fire protection. I've been in a lot of unique places, including anechoic chambers over 400,000 cubic feet in volume. I would kill to get to work with someone like Dave. I can't state enough how inspiring it is to see someone who really understands and cares about what they are doing. Unfortunately a lot of our mechanical and electrical work gets subbed out to folks who couldn't care less. It costs a lot of time and money, and never works as well.

Hey, as long as your spending money umm.. could you guys fund some dental work I need? Insurance will not cover cosmetic and I need 6 of those pearly white titanium screw in teeth. Really hate the partial plate. Kinda went face first into a metal railing in a freak accident on the ice last winter. Kidding about you paying for it of course but damn I wish I could win 10 grand in a poker game lol.

Would be awesome to do the ventilation for such a room! I'm a ventilation consultant and (among other stuff) have to deal with calculating what the volume of noise will be in the rooms depending on what AHU (Air Handling unit) I pick, ducts, silencers, hoods etc. A room like this must have insane requirments!
Cheers from Sweden :) You guys never cease to impress!

I totally relate to that detail level, i detail cars as a side job and people are often blown away at what can be done when the right people do the job. If you live in Michigan, you can get ahold of me for detailing your vehicle, if your Indiana then reach out to my good friend and fellow high quality detailer at 'Image Custom Detailing .

As a Marine, with a hearing loss due to service, I noticed a HUG Difference in the vocals once you moved inside the chamber. I was able to turn down the volume, while more clearly hearing the dialog. While I am sure you cannot film every video in the Chamber... it was truly a wonderful thing to HEAR. Pun intended.

Its been super cool to watch the PC/electronics review scene advance over the last 10 years, going from well, this is what the manufacturer says and here's a benchmark or two to We have better test equipment than the manufacturers now and will find every mistake in your spec sheet .

Wow, this is pretty cool tech, science, engineering and expertise in all aspects of this stuff. It's really impressive GN's commitment to high quality testing, good job everyone! I can't wait for the test results for all you will look into with this chamber. Sweet!

You can tell that this is an incredibly knowledgeable man in his field and is super passionate about his craft. I can 100% see why Steve hired him for the job.
That said, he also has amazing hair and he might have gotten hired based on that alone.

sweet! getting it done now means you have 2-3 months to get used to and train yourselves up for the upcoming Apex Stealth metal fans (there was a Reddit post by the official Alphacool account stating it should be October/November). looking forward to it
