Starfield GPU Benchmarks & Comparison: NVIDIA vs. AMD Performance

This video explores GPU performance in Starfield using cards like the RTX 4090, RX 7900 XTX, GTX 1070, 1080 Ti, RTX 3080, RX 7600, and plenty more. We ran all of these through the game's early access in about 16 hours, so there's still plenty more to come for Starfield content. Our immediate plans include testing Arc (once it works -- currently, Intel Arc doesn't launch Starfield) and re-running numbers as new drivers and patches continue to roll-out. It's very likely this will make its way into permanent placement in our GPU games test suite to replace some older titles. Our testing for Bethesda's Starfield focuses on 1080p, 1440p, and 4K, with a mix of low, medium, high, and ultra benchmarks. We did not use any FSR or dynamic resolution scaling for our tests (and also disabled variable rate shading and Vsync); however, if there's interest, we might visit FSR tests specifically as we have more time to work on the game -- particularly after its official launch.

Starfield did not launch in early access. Starfield launched, and the people who didn't pay enough to play day one are still waiting to get their delayed access.
I'm so tired of this terrible AAA business practice, too. It's all to make more money preying on people's sense of FOMO and fear of spoilers. As well as preying on streamers and reviewers and benchmarkers who didn't get a review code to spend more to be able to produce content as soon as possible and not be left behind.
It's long overdue for everyone to stop going along with the industry's early access marketing for this BS and start calling companies out on it. All paying customers deserve to play on day one regardless of if they just buy the 60 or 70 game only SKU or some more expensive SKU with physical or digital tat that not everyone wants.

Interesting how GPUs can be bottlenecked at quite unimpressive FPS.
New drivers, FSR3 XESS and DLSS will improve the experience overall, expecially for Nvidia (and obviously ARC), but the CPU bottlenecks will not improve much, unless a major patch will reshuffle the FPS values.
To me, this is barely a Gold release, as they had to rush the game out, so I'm not overly concerned by the lack of support for DLSS, ARC or FSR3: they will come in time, but this is not even an RT game and is pretty taxing on just released hardware, and this cast a different shadow on the whole developing optimization.
I wonder how an XBOX can perform, despite having a 6800xt equivalent GPU.

Funny how i recently got a 6600 on sale which included a code to starfield. 6600 is about 10 fps behind the XT version. I mean its playable but it aint 1080p 60fps as claimed.
Well even if ive to play 1080p low fsr im sure ill enjoy the game. Been waiting a long time for it. I only wish i couldve the opportunity to save up for the 6700xt. But well our prices are 100 over the us prices. So when i found 6600 at 200 i had to jump.
But im happy with it for my main games i play it was huge uplift. But ye i guess i shoulnt expect much of starfield. With my setup

Thank you SO much for all the work you put into this day one gpu benchmarking. It sets a solid baseline so that we can learn how the game evolves performance-wise, and how the different driver-updates will affect it.
I am happily surprised how well my 4-year old Radeon RX 5700XT is handling this game. After diving into the settings, I managed to set a decent framerate at 1440p, with FSR at 80%. This game can surely be a good incentive to upgrade later on, but for the time being, the RX 5700XT holds its ground, just.

My 2080 Super is finally starting to show its age I think. I m also running on a 7th Gen Intel which probably doesn t help! I was amazed that it could run Baldurs Gate 3 on ultra at 1440p without any performance issues but I am concerned it may not be up to Starfield when I try it next week. I need a full platform update now, but that s way down the life priorities list unfortunately.
As to the video, it will be interesting to see how game and driver updates affect the charts over time.

There was one clown on the Steam forums complaining that the game wasn't working properly on his 4090 system, but it turned out he was still installing his games on a HDD even though an SSD is a minimum requirement for Starfield, and he apparently wasn't the only one who made that particular mistake.
It seems like people may also be having issues with Windows 10 assigning Intel's efficiency cores to the primary game threads, causing poor performance on 12th and 13th gen systems.

Kinda predictable for a Creation Engine game. Decent performance indoors, inconsistent performance outdoors.
Previous Creation Engine games (like Skyrim SE/AE and FO4) handle drawcalls like DX11 games used to do, so the engine can be very CPU taxing in dense areas. Wonder if that's still the case for this iteration of the engine and if so, that might explain why AMD cards perform better since those still have the hardware scheduler whereas Nvidia still relies on software for that.

I think we need a cpu benchmark also, Starfield comes free with AM5 cpu's like my Ryzen 5 7600x (standard key) and maybe a good time to test DDR 4 vs DDR 5 setups for this game on both AMD and Intel at the same time! if you decide which is the best video card to scale across the platforms to make the test fair, it could be the RX 6800 which is a very affordable card at 429usd.
Enjoyed the Video and your team's hard work Mr Data!

Regarding Arc incompatibility, the question now is: Did Intel not put enough resources on this, or did Bethesda not provide the necessary data and information to Intel in time for the early access release? Either way, it will be Intel taking the blame, and I wouldn't be surprised if it might be the beginning of the end of Arc. Very sad to see, as an Arc user myself who put a certain level of trust in Intel to get it right.

I'm not even disappointed in the performance I'm seeing with the games auto detected settings for my middle ish system. Still on the 23.7.1 driver too. 5800x and 6750xt, 1440p 165hz monitor. Everything detected to High, two settings default to Medium, I turned motion blur down to low and turned off vsync. The experience is great. I've seen dips to 45fps and as high as 100fps but I never once felt like it struggled.

Thanks Steve. As someone who hit play last night at [slightly after] 8, I found my experience... surprising? Ran great on Radeon 7900 XT, no issues with sliders fully maxed at 1440p. And, in very rare form for Bethesda, the only bug I found in 2 hours of play was the due you talk to at the mining colony started to float away and I had to catch him [don't know what would have happened if I let him keep going ]

if i could have, i would have built an AMD system just for starfield, flight sim 2024, and future large AMD titles, but it wasnt in the cards right now. i do have a 1600af/rx580 8g system laying around, but i dont think its worth trying to run them on it. my current daily driver system is 9600k/2070 super/32gb ram so im hoping its not too _old_ to run starfield at a decent fps.

I don't understand the point of running all of these benchmarks without an upscaler. Most people are not going out of their way to turn off FSR/DLSS in their games. Basically a bunch of academic benchmarks that don't tell anyone how the game will run for them. (I know there are always some enthusiasts who turn off upscalers, but as loud as they are they are kind of irrelevant)

There is a more dense city in Starfield called Neon, has a bunch of particle effects like rain and dust, and a lot of bright neon lights to cast shadows and add more particle effects. Its also more dense in the way of crowds as well. Would be a very useful area to add for the benchmarks imo. Cant believe you guys got this out Day 1, thats insane good work Steve and Team!

Interesting that the 1 and .1 lows are fairly similar and frankly not that good IMHO. Hoping that drivers can improve those, otherwise there will be almost guaranteed stuttering/screen tearing in certain scenes. Of course, I'm also hoping it's actually a good game without a million paywalls and 80% of the content behind bad dlcs and microtransactions...

Question. Is there a baseline result for each card (like 3dmark or something repeatable like that) to ensure that each card is performing in a representative manner? Say at the start of a new benchmark session, you run this test and compare against old in order to make sure each card is still performing to that baseline spec within margin of error?

Thank you for your hard work.
I build my 1st pc this year. Coming from a Xbox series X. I wanted to play BG3, Starfield and CP2077 DLC at better settings than the series X can deliver.
I been pretty happy with the performance from my asrock 7900xt and 7700X.
Can t wait to play it at 4K native on my OLED or at 1440p on my monitor

Don't blame intel so much. I have a 4090 and can't play the game. It rejects my launching it with an error window that says my video card isn't good enough to play the game. It claims the card doesn't meet specs and then locks me out. It is happening to many people. The game is the least buggy per experts, so I doubt it will get fixed soon.

Man I think its time I do get a new PC if I want to play anything 2023 and onwards. I still am rocking a 1080 and its a solid card, plays most things reasonably well, even hitting a 144fps even if I do have to really downgrade the quality settings which I'm happy with doing, but I don't think my card would even run this game at all haha

Funny. Not that GN hasn't always been the go-to for legit reviews but--since the LTG baptism--I feel the G (in GN) swapped its master-race card for a white collar. I'm not going anywhere but I miss the power of the card i.e. ripping on companies in good/respectable fun.
... but in perpetuity, big thanks to all for the grind!
