Intel Sandy Bridge has over 30% higher IPC than AMD FX.
AMD Ryzen (Zen 1) has around 20% higher IPC than Intel Sandy Bridge (it only took them 6 years to do it)
I'm sure that for some, the FX were fun to mess with. (Overclocks) But it was, and still is a very inefficient architecture.
Only reason it is still usable for gaming(more or less), is because modern games are better optimized toward mutithreading, thus splitting the CPU load more more evenly across the usable threads. And the 8c FX it can only (hardly) outperform a decent 4c/4t CPU in few games that does just that. Even in Tombraider and Division 2(well optimized multithreading) the R3 1200 is better with half the threads and Way lower clocks. Meaning the Zen 1 IPC is so(and so) much better.
Truth is.. Buldozer 32nm had IPC just about matching Intels Core 2 45nm architecture from 2008. Take a FX 4300 vs a Q9650 same clocks. Very close.(instruction set is another story)
Intel has done little IPC improvement from 2011 up to now, but at least they did not go backwards in IPC like AMD did in late 2011 replacing the Phenom II. AMD have learned from that mistake and now has the IPC lead (again) :)

If my FX CPU out performed todays (or 2019) I would be disappointed on how bad Ryzen would be.
But if you compare to the Phenom 1 or core 2 duo from 2010 era, this thing is probably double as future proof
Future proof isnt faster than they can make a cpu in 8 years , thats crazy, its more will this be usable in 8 years more than the avg CPU
Like try using a prescrott CPU 8 years later ( 2013), you wont be avg60fps/1% 29fps hahahaha, same with bartons, thunderbirds, ect.
Case in point, you havnt upgraded yet. Its probably going to be the longest running CPU in your/my main system from 1998-2028

I dont have the thermal issues you had, I used to turn every other core off in the summer with a 200mhz clock bump due to no AC, but todays games need cores! I run 3.9ghz base, 4.5ghz turbo when its under 70f inside/outside

dunno about 8370, pretty pointless cpu, just like any other in this lineup beside 8300, which turned out to be a nice plaything for me as well as 8320e. cheap as dirt, super responsive to L3 and ram oc, completely broken multipliers on most mobos)
so i'd like to defend FX here a bit) since it aged better than i5 competition also being cheaper - sandy and ivy were stuttering harder and sooner, as far as i remember.
ofc now it's super shit, but i'd say FX turned out to be way more Futureprofed than actively promoted i3 and i5 back then.
Basically it was a nice budget option with a great price to performance ratio for those who was familiar with tech. It wasn't plug&play normies option for sure.
P.S. also your numbers are surprisingly low. I remember my 1% low in gta5 was way higher, closer to your avg. and i'm talking about 8300 4.2 (or 4.4smth). tho i'm not sure about settings i used - ultra or high.

I bought my 8350 CPUs back in 2013 and proceeded to run ESX 4.x on them for 6 years. The Intel competition in the consumer market was generally limited to 16/32 GB, didn't support ECC, and generally came with few PCIe slots. The Xeons were well outside my price range. For a home lab they were perfect, with a good price. I ran about 10 virtual machines 24x7 on each node. Windows (2003/2008), MSSQL, Linux controllers like mfi or multi-media servers. I can't complain at all about their performance, and they were quite stable. I can still see life for these CPUs/ motherboards in a home lab. Their ability to use ECC ram (with the right motherboard BIOS) means they are suitable for FreeNAS/ZFS with plenty of PCIe slots and lanes for use with cheap LSI PCIe 2.x HBAs. The Gigabytes have a single PCI style slot for interesting/weird cards that don't come in PCIe like HVD SCSI cards.

Such nostalgia. I really really wanted an 8150 when it came out, why? It came in an awesome tin box! I'm a huge sucker for that kind of stuff. Needless to say, wow was it hyped and wow was it amazingly disappointing. For those who don't remember this thing struggled to compete with i5s and at least here in Aus they were more expensive (and not even by a small amount! They were in i7 territory!) before the price inevitably dropped. Ok, me being a long time AMD faithful I'll wait for Vishera, because It'll be good this time, we promise , well, it was better than the Phenom II this time at least... but not by much... and it didn't have the cool box anymore, sooo yeah I ended up with a 3770 lol. Good times. Can't buy a top end mainstream chip for 299, or a flagship GPU for 350 anymore can you :'(

Yet the Graph it would Easily be First in 'Blender Power Usage' you deliberately left it Out,

My first build was an FX6300 build with a GTX1060 in 2016 (in my old prebuild case, which was completely closed off except for the back, so I drilled holes in the front lol) and it honestly served me pretty well without overclocking. I got 60 FPS in basically all games I played at 1080p with medium high settings, which was fine for me really, partially because my screen was only 60Hz. Thermals were fine with the stock cooler. My current Ryzen 2600 is definitely cooler though.
I bought the FX6300 for 90 euros if I remember correctly at the time, which is not a bad price tbh.

Had an FX 8350. Overclocked it to 4,8ghz for its 24/7 and 5,1ghz for benchmarking and the FX990 sabertooth board had no issues. However, gaming was a mixed bag and mostly not that great :P. I remember all the MMO's I played at the time didn't really care for its 4 modules of 2 cores . My crossfire 7950's were always underutilized, even in titles such as BF3 :p while my power bill was over the moon. Still love that system due to how much I learned from it and it was dirt cheap when I bought it. It still lives today, in a friend's house used by his girlfriend.

I still have a FX-6350. For World of Warcraft with a RX 470 4gb it worked good. I upgraded to Ryzen 1600AE in October after launch. To me all I could tell is I could open a lot more tabs at once. But there are other factors at work here. SSD for one will give vast improvement. Right now with my 3600 with is Nvme Dram cashed drive the FX is so slow. However, that done not mean it sucks for word processing and some not demanding titles like World of Warcraft and World of Warships. With the RX 470 or 570. It would be ok for lite duty tasks.

Its such a letdown to know you didnt upgrade TO this CPU
I had a Phenom1 dualcore black, phenom2 triplecore (unlocked to 4 core 3.3ghz), then the FX cpu from early 2009-2013+ with one mobo upgrade (ddr2->ddr3) The value was there. Going right into an AMD no upgrade I woulda went with the 6 core Phenom2, but AMDs strength is cheap CPU & cheap upgrade paths (my mom is running my Phenom2 & my sister Phenom1, the interchangeable sockets!)
