Why All The Hate For Ubuntu?! DistroTube Ubuntu, since it's very beginning, has always been the Linux distribution that everyone loves to hate. Why all the hate though? Is it justified or is it just mob mentality and people spouting the same nonsensical reasons? - https://ubuntu.com/

I dislike Ubuntu for the simple fact that it's buggy and slow compared to my main macos machine. I installed 21.10 and later also 20.04. It's not user friendly anymore. And the general state of software distribution on Linux is broken, flatpaks, snaps, apt... I have no idea how to manage my software or which version to install looking through software center. And the worst thing is that installing software through official means doesn't guarantee that it actually works. Literally have people in the comments warning people not to install certain versions in the app store. Also Gnome 3 is just the worse DE I've had to deal with.
Gave up on Linux for a while until realized Windows was even worse and decided to install Linux Mint with Cinnamon and I couldn't be happier. Stable, mature, fast, very user-friendly, good selection of default software, snaps are not enabled by default and I know what I'm installing when I decide to get a snap. Glad I tried it out.

After reading all the top comments, I'm very surprised I haven't seen almost anyone commenting on the fact that ubuntu comes with snaps installed by default for core desktop programs. I hate snaps with a burning passion. When they were first introduced they cluttered commands that showed mounted volumes, as snaps would show up as loop devices. I no longer know if this is the case but that to me as the start of my hatred. Theres also the fact that flatpaks are better in almost every respect but in theming. In general canonical showed me that they cannot be trusted time and time again, so when they're attempting to make the future of managing packages and dependancy hell on linux, I head the other direction.

I used to be a programmer so I'm not a complete novice with OS's. But half the time I update a Linux system I get a black screen. I'm beginning to think there are bad actors purposely making shady updates to crash your system so you have to go with a Windows or Apple system.
I really wish I had more time to learn the intricacies of Linux. Unfortunately, I can't afford Linux and have to go with a more expensive OS.

I disagree with the Amazon link not being spyware. For one reason only. With google and other services you choose whenever you want to use them they can get as much info on you as you will let them. However the Amazon search feature was built into the dash-s search feature. A important one. Which implies that simple file search could be sent to Amazon complete with metadata. That is a potential security risk.

Because some Linux users want to be an elite inside an elite and they must use some weird Linux distro to fight with and repair it everytime it quirks. Ubuntu just works for newbies, is stable, has good amount of software that runs on it without need to do magic in the terminal and is a very good chance that Steam and Wine would work without problem. This is what makes a Linux distro popular.

I started with Red Hat Linux (version 6 to be exact), then Debian before coming to Ubuntu because of the free CD's. I must admit, I'm no elite, and consider myself as a regular user. I just dislike ubuntu because of it's bloat. I use older systems such as an i5-2500 and i7 3rd Gen, and I found Fedora to be lighter when it comes to computing compared to Ubuntu.

more shade because of canonical than the system itself. sure I'm not keen on the corporate world moving in on linux but you can thank ubuntu and red hat for a lot of the stuff we use.
reality is it's the closest thing we have to an 'official' linux system. they need to move away from gnome tho. I seriously would rather use unity than the new gnome.

Okay, but as of _today,_ does Ubuntu have ANY kind of telemetry whatsoever? And does it come with proprietary software or is it all FOSS? I want a Linux Distro that respects my privacy and security to the fullest without exceptions, and one that preferably shares the same mission of the Free Software Foundation movement.

Over the past few weeks I've tried a lot of Linux distros as I'm wanting to make the move from Windows after the w10 will be our last os lie money spinner. The 1st one I tried was Ubuntu and I was blown away as to how good it was. Although I did like it I preferred the simple clean lines of Linux mint.

Ubuntu 8.04 got me going with Linux and all was well for a few years. A very nice distro., Then they got a terrible not-invented-here infection that festered into Unity DE and renaming all the libraries from Debian repos so many packages are dependency incompatible ...just because.
