Don't use the command prompt - I could not stop or task kill the windows update service using that method. Search for your 'Services' control panel. Find in the list and then disable 'Windows Updates'. Restart. Then go to C: Windows>SoftwareDistribution folder ... Rename it as SoftwareDistributionOld and create a new folder next to it called SoftwareDistribution. Search for your 'Services' control panel. Set Windows Updates to automatic. Restart. Your updates should now be working. Mine are. You can delete the SoftwareDistributionOld folder now if you want to save the disk space. (I just did that part of the process in case my folder tinkering was the wrong thing to do).

I had the same problem as NibNabs, however if you listen to our instructor, you will find he said, if it doesn't stop then restart your computer and try the commands again. Took me 5 times, however I did stop wuauserv and stop bits too. then the folders were released and I was able to throw them away. Thanks for the tutorial!

In the SoftwareDistribution folder I can delete 90% of the files, but one or two files are still left and I can't remove them. Tried the Shift + Delete and still here.
