The Dark Side of Discord (And best Solutions and Alternatives) - Techlore Discord is one of the best places to host communities, but let's talk about the nastier dark side of the social giant. We like to be proactive with things, so get ready for solutions and alternatives as well! 0

I'm tired of discord censorship. I follow a content creator who has drawn the ire of a couple of people who have made it their mission to report the server as soon as someone posts something that could be seen as offensive. The problem with that is the fact that the way people talk in discord is private and exclusive which discord themselves even emphasize, so people often say shit they don't mean or wouldn't say in the public eye or who are outright joking but anytime that does happen the stalker decides to report, getting the whole server shut down and now we have to have draconian speech rules to prevent discord's heavy handed approach to censorship. It's also pretty ass that discord is not being impartial about politics, if you are a legitimate communist spouting very extreme views you'll get a pat on the back, but if you say you don't like trans people your shit gets nuked with no warning and 0 tolerance. Why they don't let communities moderate themselves with their own rules in regards to political opinions is beyond me (ok yes I know its for corporate reasons. At this point I think its almost worse than twitter's censorship which is morbidly hilarious, at the very least be consistent with your censorship.

It would be cool to make an open source discord client which uses PGP or some other form of encryption, maybe even a data over audio system for voice calls.
I use discord for image hosting on my website & I hot link the images to the discord URL, I also use Discord for lightweight fille hosting too. Stuff like Minecraft texturepacks, mods, & world files. Use as much of their bandwidth as possible & save on my hosting costs.
Also I tried using Signal for a bit but it lacks a lot of useful features, such as mic volume & adjusting volume of other call participants. Also Signal is an absolute no go for talking to anyone who I dont know in real life. I have zero intention on giving my number out to the world. When are USERNAMES coming to Signal! It's a great platform but no usernames, sketchy crypto instead of just a Monero wallet in the app, Signal isn't perfect but it's pretty good.

Matrix/Element are close to bridging the gap in terms of features in regards to Discord.
But what Discord does is just too good for me to leave. Quickly sharing my current game as a live stream is very important to me and my friends as we are all visually impaired and helping each other - often times quickly - is very much important. Also, I don't want to rely on another service - Jitsi in this case - to do my audio video calling. Luckily, Matrix is getting native support through a recent proposal - woohoo!
I see a lot of potential in Matrix and Element, but it's still too young to just throw at my novice friends and be like, -use this now! - xD I use it, mainly for bridges actually, and it works well. Just wish updating said bridges was easier, but thats a sysops thing that im too lazy to implement. ;

All of this plus the fact that like the rest of big tech, Discord censores any opinions they don't like or -hate speech- as they call it, while letting blatantly harmful stuff like threats and doxxing happen if it's by the people they agree with, for all I know including some of the staff themselves. Not to mention the rampant amount of actual (Cheese Pizza) that gets ignored because they'd rather focus on -muh harmful opinions-. All of this only makes the data collection even scarier.

This is why I dun understand why servers ask for your personal ID in RP servers. I get the reason for content if its +18, but I don't like the idea that discord is fine with strangers asking this from people. I just don't like it, nor am I comfortable with it, and I started avoiding servers that ask for ID. With discord being this invasive with our info, +18 content need to be put on a platform that's not discord. =/

Serious question (as it is debated in my circle of friends from time to time): Do they also record contents of video or audio streams? I mean, recording clicks and messages is kinda cheap on the data use side. But then again, it would not be the first service to exploit pretty much any kind of information it can get its hands on, even if it meant larger amounts of video and audio data to be stored.

Just awesome. I got invited to a group on Discord, today. I was interested, so I thought I'd accept the invitation. Now? I'm not so sure I want to accept. Sigh. Well, that's, that, I guess. Socializing sucks for me y'all. It feels like I'll never know what socializing with people is like, because of all the random, weird, interfering, crap I summon, like this, each time I try.

Discord is really not a safe place. There's trolls, hackers, doxers, catfishes and many many pedos and dumb teens like me who like to pick fights with random Discord users. After watching this video, there's also no privacy which is damn concerning. Every info on me is logged and stored and unprotected. So no thanks. Im out.

I came to this video because I need to leave discord, as I don't approve of their new TOS.
I think someday I will need to move to something like IRC, but my friends and family are centralized on discord, so I'm kinda screwed there.

For anyone considering using or letting their kids use discord, be sure to read the terms of service. They masquerade data collection and keeping you identifiable as protecting you from misinformation and bullying.
