In a laptop, the same silicon will perform vastly different depending on what machine it's installed in; cooling, power etc. are limiting factors. There is always a clock that every system should be able to do, but favorable conditions can still get past.
Nvidia, for example, has a base clock, but it can downclock if needed for thermal limits, and the boost clock, is still a conservative estimate.
What Tom was saying was also in response to Gordon asking why the clock speeds were so low compared to AMD & Nvidia. Clock speed isn't really what's important, absolute performance is. Nvidia current gen tops out around 2GHz with OC, Radeon is 3GHz, but the performance is pretty close.
Still take it with a grain of salt, but I don't see anything terribly misleading here.

The explanation of the GPU clock speed was ludicrous and I hope that it doesn t represent how Intel intends to communicate with their customers.
But I guess I shouldn t think too deeply about it, all of these type of interviews are just for PR and I don t expect PC World to refute the claims.
Ultimately, PR can say whatever they want to whomever they want but the litmus test will be the games that are out today. Not future games or engineering made tech demos. All other talk, from an unproven player in this space, is just noise.
I am hopeful for what this will bring to the laptop integrated GPU space.
I am highly doubt their desktop product will be competitive in the discrete GPU space. Due to its late release, this product is competing with next-gen Nvidia and AMD products and it won t stand a chance.

This interview was painful. They made up numbers to replace MHz because they want to hide their clocks. That was basically what he said in a very long winded fashion. When asked about expected performance his answer was word salad about getting good laptop performance. I could dissect almost everything he said in this interview, and it would paint a very ugly picture. This is not looking good for arc.

It is extremely nice Intel is putting these cards out now! The market definitely does not need a continued duopoly. One hopes the added competition will bring prices down. However, that depends on real world testing yet to be seen. I do not put any stock in a chart. Based on past history, it is wait and see. It would be REALLY nice not to have to deal with a 700+ watt monster.

I know he dodged around all performance or comparison questions with PR speak. But charts did say that the A370M target that was met was 1080p 90fps, medium and high details in AAA games. Pretty good for a laptop. I would expect that from the A5 platform. Maybe this will pleasantly surprise.

Tom: If you're trying to do any type of inferencing, the core algorithmic processing is matrix multiplication. And a systolic array is the world's best way to do programmable matrix acceleration!

Will be very interested to see how the ARC works for x265 transcoding. If they have good entry level pricing I (and plex supports it) can see me getting one to use with my Plex Server.
