I have an older version of Photoshop (cs4) when I get out of quick mask mode, and left with the selection I pressed ctrl + J but it does not separate the selection, it just makes another copy of the image.

Why not use pen tool to draw path and then convert it to selection. That's so easy than drawing selection via lasso tool when you have mousy mouse.

Not sure if the video is outdates but pressing q deselects the area. Also, CMD J is not copying it. Any suggestions?

Do You actually mean parallel when you say perpendicular? I see you draw parallel but say perpendicular.
