BEWARE! The Gradient Map in Photoshop is FAULTY!

we will discover the faults of this adjustment layer and how it can be fixed. HELP US CREATE MORE FREE VIDEOS: Support us at Patreon Alex: It's not faulty, it's just that it is very exact. The reason the gradient changed is because you started a few pixels away from the very edge of your artboard and the absolute black is dragged a little bit inwards. You have to be very precise so it won't change. The reason the image (the girl with the beanie) changed is simplier, the original photo's black is not absolute black, it's dark gray, same for white, gray, almost white. You have to check the darkest and brightest points on your images to have the best results. Photos rarely contain absolute black or absolute white.

I actually had realized this, when I was applying the random gradient map as you showed on a previous video when I tried since I reactivated my adobe, it didn't give a great result and I played with the smoothness button and this is when I realize that it used to not be defaulted like this before. But it's great that you explained it, cause sometimes when photoshop made the update, it's confusing to adjust and know what to do when things don't work the same.

Nicely done and presented. but. does this property makes Photoshop faulty. I do not think so. It is probably not right to set the default value as 100% smoothness. Faulty is when you click Save As. and take the same name of a previous. JPG file you want to export, and you get the pop-up screen that says cancel of overwrite. then you click overwrite, and a new file copy is created with the same name + copy. jpg as name. That is FAULTY photoshop.

another great video. I was wondering why this was happening!
I have another pb. maybe you can help with that one too. I used to use CS5 ( I know) and then I could apply, for example, on the same layer, many radial gradients, on different areas of the picture, to lighten or darken only specific zones. now I can only apply 1 and have to create many duplicates. am I explaining this right? and why is this happening?

hey I know your one of the best photoshop guru in the world. so I have a question can you make a video on how to install or make existing xmp preset files work in adobe camera raw 2020. I've read plenty articles and no one seems to have a work around only for older version of camera raw, Lightroom and photoshop. most people get a error message presets were already import etc. thanks in advance

Is there any way you can talk about gradient banding issues and how we can soften them? I've tried to adjust my screen but it turns out it's not a graphic issue; it's something very common in Photoshop. I never have this issue with Medibang and I end up using that for the things like gradients and the airbrush as it's so much better than Photoshop.

Umesh thank you so much for sharing your amazing skills! Can I ask how in the world you rotate the Clone Brush tool to change the angle of the selected area? You did this in one of your hair selection videos but I can not figure out which one.
Tried googling this and it doesn't seem to exist?

Hey! I've just noticed that gradients don't work the way they supposed to work. (color blending mode now looks like a basic gradient affecting the whole image, not specifically lights or darks) Any idea why is this happening and how to reverse it? It is affecting your tutorial too. Thanks

There is something I don't get it with the gradient filter. When I set the gradient to normal, I don't get the same result as him, the gradient is over the image, not blended like him. What do I do wrong?

This is a great example of Software Engineers inaccurately naming a feature or function. Turning SMOOTHNESS to 100% should actually SMOOTH out the gradient & blend the transitions more gradually.

Wow, I just discovered that the gradient mapping wasn't exact last week and couldn't find anyone explaining why or how to fix it. Then this popped up in my feed and solved the problem! Thanks!

I have started to watch less Photoshop tutorials over the years, mainly because I started to watch more of Unmesh's videos. One source for all of your Photoshop needs. Thanks man.

this is actually so damn useful. i knew about the smoothness slider and i still didn't think it was going to be the culprit. this was seriously like an episode of LOST

Hello, may I ask how to tidy the new gradient in gradient map?
Example: I create a new gradient and it's default at bottom, I wanna move this gradient to middle.

reply

I thin that in the first example. The blacks of the B/W image isn't 100% black. The gradient maps, maps this to 100% black and that's why the contrast is enhanced.

Explaining is so much clearing and I am weak in English but I can understand what do you wanna say.
Thank a lot. One of my teacher in other world is that you: )
