X Training System - Overhead shoulder pressing, either with a barbell or dumbbells, is one of the most effective yet potentially harmful exercises you can do. especially if you already have shoulder joint or impingement pain. That is. unless. you know how to modify the shoulder press to eliminate the aggravating part of the exercise. In this video I'm going to show you how you can modify the classic dumbbell shoulder press to still get the amazing shoulder muscle building benefits of the exercise without the discomfort that can come from having your elbows pointing out to your sides. Before you think that you will be sacrificing the amount of weight that you can lift on this shoulder exercise with the tweak I'm going to show you, make sure you watch the end of the video and I'll show you how to instantly overload your shoulder muscles (without aggravating the joints) with the single arm press variation. If you look at the normal anatomy of the shoulder, and the glenohumeral joint in particular, you notice that the natural angle of the glenoid fossa is slightly forward. This means that when you perform overhead shoulder pressing with your elbows straight out to your side that you're going against the anatomy and causing potential for structural damage. By making the adaptation shown in this workout video, you'll see not only how but why making this shoulder overhead pressing switch can very well be the solution you've been waiting for to get your shoulder bigger without damaging your joints in the process. That said, if you feel that you've been looking for a complete solution to getting bigger and more developed muscles without the breakdown that comes from lifting too heavy or at the wrong time with the wrong program, then you should definitely

I know this video is kind of old. But are there any suggestions for shoulder presses if your gym is sucky (I mean planet fitness) where you cannot do land mine presses but still work the shoulders. I do get a lot of shoulder pain doing dumbbell shoulder presses and I am always afraid I am going to pull or tear something or destroy my rotator cuff in my right shoulder. I will say my gym has a smith machines but I avoid them because every time I tried to bench presses or squats I feel a resistance moving down as if the machine needs greased and when push up for my rep it feels like a resistance (not a weight resistance) as if the machine is grinding in on its self.

Your a genius! Never thought to even try anymore over head presses. Jacked my shoulder (deep in the back of my shoulder) up this time last year benching 2x a week working toward a competition. Have had constant problems since. I used to sleep with my arm draped over my face. not anymore! Anything overhead, rotating or like you said as soon as my elbows come out away from my chest it starts! Gonna try these presses tonight, always thought these were more of a chest exercise tho? - I've also see guys use calf raise station for shoulders too

Jeff I have a question. I went to an ortho and he -diagnosed- me with a shoulder impingement injury. He gave me a list of rehab exercises to do. But if feel like my recovery has peaked. My shoulder isn't 100% but it has come a long way. I still feel pain where my clavicle meets my humerus (right on that lite bump on the shoulder) when doing pressing exercises. I don't want to over do it when I workout but I don't want to stop either. Should I fight through the pain or do something else? Would really love a response. Thanks in advanced

I seem to have the opposite problem. I can do dumbbell shoulder press, but if I do it with a barbell I get the pain. I know I could just stick to the dumbbells, but I'd prefer to know what's going on and, if there is anything I can do to help fix it. Also, it doesn't hurt at all with light weight, so the movement itself is not a problem, I just get the pain on the left side only, which is my dominant side, when I increase the weight.

Got a post labram tear on each shoulder. been out of gym for 4 months over it. dr said the tears are small and he does not think its the source of my pain. not sure, but stay off the smith machine (I dont care how goo ur form is) the smith's track for pressing sucks for some people. I also am healing and getting back on track. lots of athletes have labral tears and do not even know it. study's show anyway

EQUIPMENT VARIATION IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN OLYMPIC BAR: use a pipe or broomstick in combination with a low cable or some rubber bands, you could use your foot as an anchor for the band - then you can achieve the same -lever- type motion and take the strain off the shoulder.
PS: Thank you for this - i kept getting pain trying to shoulder press with cables & dumbbells.

Jeff, I-m having bicep pain when overhead pressing. Any idea what is causing that? I also have some pain with barbell pressing (flat) and virtually none when pressing dumbbells (flat. I also have pain when curling (same arm. Any insight would be awesome as it-s been months now and it-s really holding me back.

Anyone with chronic shoulder pain try this, not getting pain, but still getting good results? I've made millions of alterations over the course of the last couple years to my OHP but shoulder pain every time still (and the other day I even hurt my shoulder blade)
