In my workouts, I started to pre-exhaust the targeted muscle with isolation movements first, before my compound movement. This allows me to still get a good workout, while also having the benefit of using less weight with the compound exercise. Using less weight is actually a good thing, because it is easier on the joints. Although, doing the compound movement first also has its benefits too.
