I think thick padding on a bench is better than thin, while maybe you have a little less control and you might wobble a little bit, its much easier and far more comfortable to get super low with the press and activate the entire chest, especially the top outer corners

1 tip that I use for cardio: Cover the timer! It makes me focus on other things, and makes it more bearable! Good luck on the cut, I'm also plant-based, but on a maintenance, gonna cut as soon as exams are done!

Have you noticed an increase in strength from bulking? Since turning vegan, I've lost a considerable amount of strength from the fat loss. Used to flat bench 400+ and squat/dl 500+, today I'm like 75% of that.
