In prison 99% of the guys that have well developed shoulders without using machines and majority weight lifting equipment use soda pop cans and water bags. They do primarily side and front raises, over the shoulder throwing movement and shrugging. Yes you can go heavier with machines working out with fluid helps build all the stabilizer muscles as well.

No need to twisting and bending in the case of lateral raise. it will still involve front delt. U cant only focus on middle delt. It doesn't work like that. Unnecessary fancy stuff and over knowledge should be avoided. Just bending Sideways by grabing a pole with one hand will do. this will increase your range of motion.
