Why Short Rest Times Are Killing Your Muscle Gains

Why Short Rest Times Are Killing Your Muscle Gains

Another overanalyzed, overhyped, and overcomplicated training variable is rest times. Most -experts- believe you should keep rest periods short in order to provide an anabolic environment, while achieving a massive pump. The amount of time we spend resting in between sets was once thought to be a very important factor for building muscle mass-particularly due to acute -spikes- in growth hormone when rest intervals are kept short. These days, however, we-ve got vast amounts of compelling evidence that suggests otherwise. Hormonal responses do still result from shorter rest periods, but those short bursts of growth hormone (GH) aren-t responsible for more muscle growth. This isn-t to say that there is anything inherently wrong with short rest intervals; however, if they-re impairing your ability to perform, they can become a huge roadblock to your training. The point of rest periods is twofold: (1) to ensure you-re primed and ready for your next set and (2) to mitigate the amount of time you spend in the weight room. As long as you-re resting just enough to ensure you-re recovered and ready for your next set-without resting so long that you end up spending your entire day at the gym-you-ll be all set. Although there isn-t an exact timeframe you should aim for, there are some basic guidelines I-d recommend. However, let me be very clear: I do not expect you to sit around with a stopwatch and time your rest periods. Instead, pay attention to your body and use your best judgment when deciding whether or not you-re ready for your next set

Personal experience; I don't time my rest periods between intense compound lifts, they end up varying from 2 to 10+ minutes (if i'm having a bad day emotionally i tend to be very slow)
I haven't noticed any correlation whatsoever between the gains i make and my rest times, not even 5% difference. Although i train for strength not mass, so for bodybuilders perhaps the rest times are more important.
I do not barbell bench, barbell squat or deadlift (instead i do various push ups/dips, pistol squats and single legged deadlifts) so fortunately i rarely get angry people telling me to hurry up with equipment.

My friend was trying to tell me a while ago -I have to get back man, my rest can't be longer than 1-2min! -
Let me tell you, my workout energy levels are pretty shitty; I've become nauseous in the middle of a gym sesh and had to sit for 15-20 minutes to ease my stomach and alleviate my dizzyness. Then I finished my sets, and I still made gains. All that matters is getting the reps in for the day.
I've even become so tired so early (due to sleep deprivation or mild illness or whatever) and finished the workout hours later.

yeah I never bought into this 45 seconds. listen to your body, rest between sets, and you would be surprised at how you will be able to complete each set with heavy weights and good form. back to back sets just result in premature failure

But one could lift all day if you rest enough between reps? How will one get to the point where they get to failure, where muscle gains happen I thought, when you're constantly allowing yourself to rest back to full? I need to read more into this.

remember. your muscle doesnt count reps. It counts time under tension. ideally if you're working muscle endurance you want to do the exercise within a 60 sec period 60 divide by per rep. Hypertrophy 45 sec/ pepr rep and strength 15-30/rep. :D

I was doing 6-8 reps with 2-3 minutes rest for over a year so needed a change and now doing 8-10 reps with 1-1 1/2 minutes rest and I-m still finding I-m progressing each week on all my compounds

This industry is so confusing and deceptive, my advice is do whatever F--king works for you, if u wana get big quick, Juice the f--k up, or be patience & work your way up! Anything is achievable

I do supersets than rest for 3-5 min by listening one song making gains than guys out of breath rest for 30secs and starts n screams wen they try same reps with same weight

I wonder if the growth hormone after a set is what causes the pump. I know it's increased bloodflow in the muscle but what do you think incites it?
reply

Take rest as long as you need to dont speed things up make sure you perform the exercises with some good quality reps unless your doing a cardio -
