Alright let's get into my experience with intermittent fasting and if it would be a good fit for you! Last week I did a video on my thoughts on dieting in general and had quite a few people want more specific information on the intermittent fasted style of dieting and instead of just regurgitating information that's already out there I thought it would be better to just give my experience and talk about how my body responded, how to break a fast and other key takeaways

I'm 66 and have been involved in fitness for most of my life. In the 90's, I was able to do the -eat every 4 hours- type of thing, and it worked, but I think the main reason it worked was because of the enormous amount of cardio I was doing. For about the last 15 years I worked in a job that had me working over 90 hours per week. When you're working that many hours, many things just don't get done, such as regular workouts. I didn't have a chance to eat anything during the day, and would only be able to eat a small meal when I got home at night. Since I live in Texas, it gets unbearably hot in the summer and I needed to keep drinking fluids all day long, especially since part of my job was crawling around in attics. I would drink Diet Coke all day long, and with the Diet Coke, and the one small meal each day, I was getting fatter and fatter. I couldn't figure out what the problem could be because I was consuming less than 1000 calories each day. One side effect was that I developed a huge growth on the inside of my left thigh, like a softball under my skin. The doctors called it a hernia wouldn't do anything about it because of where it was -- right under the femoral vein and too close to the femoral artery. I got to a weight around 315 on this diet of less than 1000 per day.
I discovered Intermittent fasting and cut out the diet coke. I learned that diet coke would cause an insulin spike, which would also make my HGH levels drop. I found out that my HGH levels could only be kept high by fasting because every time you consume anything (except for black coffee, water and unsweetened tea) it will raise your insulin levels and lower your HGH levels. IF works really well, since I still don't eat during the day. I've lost over 60 pounds, so far. One side benefit is that the hernia on my thigh is slowly getting smaller. It took about 10 years to get to that size. It will take a long time to go away. I guess I should rephrase this. If I'm very strict with the IF, and strictly do the 4/20 eating schedule, and consume a lot of water, it works like magic. If I keep drinking diet coke in the evening, after the window is closed, I can kiss any fat loss that I would have had good bye. As long as I'm strict about it, it works like magic. If I relax even a little -- such as not drinking enough water, it doesn't work at all. At least these are my experiences with IF.

when fasting a gallon of lemon water/trace mineral drops helps me big time thru the day, but throw in a 6-8 gram dose of organic psyllium husk capsules here and there and I get full plus heart, weight loss and colon health benefits. Throw in an oz and a half to two ounces of clean spirulina and an oz and a half to two ounces of clean chlorella, 1 tbsp org turmeric, 1 tbsp lion's mane vigorously shaken with part juice part water or just water and stevia. Let it sit for a short while if clumpy and any clumps will go away after shaking again. It has a mild nutty flavor and you get supercharged heavy metal/toxin detox benefits all while enjoying the highest bioavailable protein on earth. It's a win-win. Stay clear of the cheap chinese sourced brands that are USDA approved and pay a few more bucks to avoid the heavy environmental toxins. Hawaii has some clean stuff. These high chlorophyll algaes are high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, omega 3's and so much more it's crazy. They are high in iron, but even at my large does, my iron levels are always in the 42-46 range which is perfect for me. Personally, these shakes with organic veggies and grass fed/finished meats and slowly getting into exercising again as a lifestyle, by starting with walking, brought me back to premium health and fighting shape at 49 after getting up to 350lbs of mean, angry and bitter. Now, i'm no pussycat but I feel so much better now that occasionally I have been mistaken for one.

it is true i was eating 500 calories from morning to night so 2 meals 1 meal morning yogurt with oats and after 5 hours apple and at night eating 1500 calorie food. it was hamburger meat and baked potato and with no oil and with no bread. Yes i lost like this 30kg. At night is best to eat when you want to lose fat. If you eat high calorie food at morning you got all day problem with energy. why? your stomach needs to destroy the food and put forward and your energy goes there. and u become more tired at day. When you eat high calorie food at night you have next day all day energy from stored glykogen. Many people ask me how to lose fat. it is very hard you can train as much as you want but after how to put muscle is even harder. you must not eat to much food than you become again fat. It is really hard. if it is easy everyone could be bodybuilder. Yes when you start to build muscle more time you eat per day better it is but how? 8 meals every 3 hours with from 200 calories to 400 calories max. And i gained muscle 0 fat.

I'm going to stay with old-school science and logic. Putting pressure on your body due to exercise requires recovery including nutrition. Getting 220-260 grams of protein a day requires separate meals ideally spaced around 3 hours apart. What isn't mentioned in this video is that in any eating session your body has a digestive window. In that window or meal you can only absorb so many calories, so much fat, protein, and carbs(sugars. The rest you pass out of you when going to the bathroom. The requirements make fasting good only for cleansing the system, or being in a temporary calorie deficit. or just working to getting used to doing without. If you're looking to build and improve I would never recommend fasting. ever. Just my thoughts, cheers! -

Thanks, I've been wondering about this. Through the years I cut down from 6 meals a day to 4, was thinking about cutting down to 3, but it seems pretty difficult to eat as many proteins AND absorb them correctly. I am a hardgainer and won't stand to lose muscle mass, so forget about IF. I have a friend who's good at IF though, but it all comes down to how your body is shaped. Very muscular people seem to get the the most of it, or maybe I am wrong.
I've been watching Thomas de Lauer's story, he def got in a great shape, but he was originally a huge fat, AND muscular guy. He lost all the fat for sure, but also muscle, although he does look great.

that fact that you're binge eating or feeling hungry after 12 hours tells me you didn't try this long enough. Intermittent fasting works after a month or more of doing it. along with Keto it does way more than -losing body fat. - What you're doing with Intermittent Fasting is boosting your natural growth hormone production. for natural bodybuilders this is a key strategy. You're looking at the aesthetic quick strategy - these diet techniques are more about hormone adjustments and improvements. I can tell you that I've been doing this (intermittent and low carb) for a few years and I can maintain a -2 weeks out- physique year round with no issue.

What you're actually talking about is called -Time Restricted Eating-
Fasting is actually -Extended Fasting-
Nil by mouth for 24+ hrs. With best results occurring w alternate day fasting. 40hrs between eating. And working out the day in between eating.
If you need to lose weight, tone and build muscle, this is the way to go.
You can't exercise your liver (Dr Jason Fung. At 30 hrs you burn all liver glycogen and go into autophagy, burning fat and clearing the body of rogue cells.
If you're already a body builder, with a low body fat %. disregard the above.
For everyone else - go for it!

Intermittent fasting works really well if you are trying to lose weight and fat. I went from 298lbs to 235lbs before I stopped. Couple of reasons I stopped. One is I was losing too much weight and with that I loss muscle mass and also strength. Its hard to get the proper amount of protein in the small eating window. And the 2nd thing is it causes constipation. Really dont know the reason why that is but a group of us at work started fasting together and almost all of us had issues with constipation. But if you are trying to drop some weight and are not concerned with muscle mass then IF will work.

Ryan- You mentioned something in this video that I have wondered and doubted for a bit, I've lost a bunch of weight over the last year and a half and definitely did loose muscle in the process, but I also wasn't lifting or anything, the last 6 months I have been trying to put on muscle and am visually, that said I am only probably getting maybe 80G of protein a day (vegan protein for breakfast and then chicken for lunch and dinner) I am currently down to -188lbs. Do you have first hand experience that would suggest I am holding myself back by not getting enough nutrients?

I've been doing it for a few weeks now, with your workouts and protein shakes as the only supplement, andI noticed that for the first time in my life I felt more defined around the belly without doing lots of cardio while maintaining a good volume on the bigger muscles. In terms of time windows the 20: 4 ratio seems to work with me, if I spend more time usually I start to have headaches. As Ryan says, if you start to feel comfortable, push it a little harder that week and definitely, you'll find results.
