A couple of topics have been coming up a lot recently in my messages and comments so I thought we could chat about it! How do you deal with weight and body fluctuations? Are they normal? What impact does weight loss have? I have found some tips that have really helped over the years which I hope will help! Secondly, when is too old to learn new skills/what if you aren't experienced? Most of mu hobbies I have learnt in my late 20's, early 30's and I 100% know that age is just a number and experience doesn't matter! I would love to hear your thoughts below! x Linttastic: I turned 30 last month and I've been thinking about this for a long time. nice to hear you share your experience about it because I was definitely thinking I may be too old to learn handstands this year. You're right that you may not be great at it, but at least can pick up a hobby. I know for myself I hold myself to high expectations so I think that if I'm going to try to learn something, I should only do it if I can achieve a certain level of it. or else, why do it at all? It sounds like an ego thing, but I think I'm just really self conscious of people seeing me fail a lot at something haha.

It-s funny the mental barriers we put in our way which stop us from just going for it! I think we tend to put people in categories and that-s a big factor in terms of how we see ourselves. How many times have I heard -she-s the sporty type- or -I-m not the sporty type-? I-ve said it myself as growing up I was overweight and saw anything physical as not for me. Changing my outlook took a long time-. way beyond just losing weight. Gradually I realised that I was enjoying moving my body and that there were physical activities which I actively liked doing or even was pretty good at! I-m 50 in two years time and a few months ago I got it into my head that I wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle. I didn-t tell anyone other than my partner and the sense of empowerment it gave me was incredible. Having passed my licence it-s amazing how many people have said I-m mad! Why? Should 48 year old women not take their motorcycle licence? Is there a certain type/age of people who fit the motorcycle riding norm? I think not!
PS - Love your vlogs -

I try and stay away from weight fluctuations by weighing myself once a month at the end of each month. If your in a deficit you -should- not go up in a month but maybe day to day you might fluctuate so it cuts that out. I have been slack and not lost weight at all but the month would be so bad I would predict it. About the laptop Lucy I was given an ancient tablet I write songs on. I want to write a story/book and thought I'd get a laptop but I also don't like the size. I will just buy a wireless keyboard for my tablet it will be perfect! :) by by have a good week!

Thank you thank you thank you Lucy for sharing your experience with us! I can relate to so many things you're telling (we even have the same hiking boots, and it's extremely nice to know they are other people thinking a similar way and experiencing similar things.
I agree mountains are such an empowering environment!
One is definitely never too old to learn new skills (and never too old to wear baggy jeans) and it can bring so much happiness in life to follow what we deeply want rather than what the norm dictates

Scarpa good make, I've Mendle Nepal Pro for Grivel crampons and ice axe. Been very shy, self conscious and anxious till fifty, then something clicked in my head and thought feck it. Been following bouldering since lockdown 1 and mountaineering all my life. Been hiking a while myself to help weight, stamina & mental health. Put laptop in black bag with dry rice may help soak up the coffee from screen.

Thank you for this Lucy as I've just started trying body weight exercises at the age of 54! I'm determined not to give in to age and flab! - My goals are to do a full pull up and a chin up and a full press up and controlled handstands and a sit up on a punch bag. I know it will take months but I'm going to keep trying until I get there. Thanks for all the tips and inspiration --

I would definitely love to see videos about your hikes and the things you have learned since starting! -Also thank you for inspiring all of us to get out of our comfort zones and trying new things. I have been reminding myself lately that the most important thing about hobbies and experimenting with new ones is that I am enjoying it regardless if I am -good- at it or not.

Wow. I sure hope we never stop learning new skills. I am 58 and I am working on my first pull-up, my first handstand and MORE. In fact, I did my first mud run obstacle course last summer (4. 5 miles and 24 obstacles and an obscene amount of mud and water. I am NOT a practiced athlete. I am in ok shape. So I have to work hard and practice more. But that's OK!

Thank you Lucy! This is awesome! Another thing that sometimes helps, no super functional, but it helps to think that someone out there in the world wishes they had my body, whether it's because of what I can do, muscles, size, whatever. It is very comparative, but it helps me value my body.

You-re never too old - you may have to make adjustments but that is not just due to age, it could be due to body shape, flexibility, different strength in different parts of your body etc. I learnt how to jump rope at the tender age of 52 and I love it! It is my favourite form of cardio.
