I think what you said about how the city should identify and boost its current advantages makes a lot of sense. The city is already the agreed upon capital of Latin America, and we are now seeing a major boom in the entertainment industry, specifically spanish speaking media. There is now an entire section of Little Haiti that used to be abandoned warehouses and is now a hub of small studios. Add that to Univision s and Telemundo s multiple studios and offices and the city could really become spanish speaking Hollywood if it wanted to.

Me trying to find a good place to open a business. Cali and Texas are the extreme opposite of each other when it comes to regulations and deregulations and both bad choices because of it. Florida is a humid swamp and a hurricane magnet. When I ask Google it says that Boise Idaho will be the next Silicon Valley. Hmmm. Didn't expect a landlocked state. This is more than once now that I heard that this place is the new best.

If Techies take over a place like Miami, support for the federal flood insurance program will dry up when they see it used for them. Miami only works as a city because the Federal Government provides insurance for people who live there against hurricane flood damages - take out that money, and much fewer people would be excited about living there.

This makes sense only if you understand that modern tech IPOs are just money laundering for the underwriters, VCs, series A investors, and top execs. Thee employees who built the company usually get nothing due to a 6 month lockout from selling which the others don't have to suffer under.
Tech needs talent. Miami doesn't have it.

The main problem with these Valley wannabes is their only competitive advantage is a race to the bottom of tax give-aways. But if cost is the only advantage, a company can move as easily from Bay to Bangalore as it can Bay to Boise. A strong research base and iconoclastic culture are the main prerequisites.

It's not really possible for a city to just magically spring up a silicon valley. It does happen organically. But how many times over the last 30 years have I heard about mayors saying they're going to be the next silicon valley and then act as if things like taxes or office space was what the difference was?

They can t because Apple is in Cupertino, Google in Mountain View and FB in Menlo Park. They bought so much land it s so congested here. Then you have Stanford and UCSF. It would be really hard for Miami to compete, but if they could take some tech companies that would be great

With the rise of remote work, I question whether anywhere will be the next Silicon Valley. Sure, companies will still have offices that are grouped together, but tech employees will have the luxury of choosing where they want to live more than ever before.

I think silicon valley is going to turn into Detroit. Everyone is moving out due to high taxes, high costs of living, crime, pollution. Maybe in 30 years they'll give away houses in San Francisco like they do in Detroit to people willing to pay the taxes
