9: 22 Pizza, Ensure? Coke and Mountain Dew It's like setting a bomb off. Yep. Glycemic shock. Think about Keto-- you still get hungry, but it's not the most important thing. You eat and it's like filling up the tank in your car, your car doesn't drive differently, just further. And once you're burning fat instead of carbs, once your gut is empty, you burn body fat. You never 'hit the wall' you stop thinking, 'I better eat something'. Even though you guys are trim and fit, you've still got days and days of body fat that you could burn. And you'll never feel sick from eating, you'll never buy another powerbar or soda.
When I started sea kayaking I did 3 hour runs. 90 minutes on the dot Wham I hit the wall, then I'd slog back. That's just burning up the glycogen and shifting to burning fat. That slog could go on for days. By the time I landed I was tired but I wasn't hungry. Now that I'm keto I stop eating the day before at about 4pm (intermittent fasting. The next morning I get up, drink some black coffee, drive to the beach, launch and paddle for 4 hours-- no snacks, just more black coffee and water. Normally I'll eat at 9am to 10 am, but if I'm paddling I won't eat until 11 am or even 1 pm. Sure I'm hungry, but not desperate. If I need to make another stop on the way home? No problem eating can wait.
Also be careful if you have a 'barfalot. ' I did one of those in Japan-- applied a too high concentration of Deet and then started erupting. Kind of fitting for two days of hiking live volcanoes. I drank a ton of water afterward the barfing, but I was seriously dehydrated the next day with half the Shiretoko Traverse to complete--and an 8 hour stretch between water.
(You guys would like this route. Wall to wall bears, a nice scramble up Rasudake, and in July you walk on snow, a few hours later on ground that's about 120 degrees and smells like sulfur. ) Another good video. Thanks.

Visiting SLC from Oregon and I just did the Bullion Divide today which overlaps the WURL from Sugarloaf Mtn until White Baldy. Was great to get some perspective on exactly what Danny and his Mediocre Amateur crew does. Put simply, I nearly shit my pants just on that short section. This is my first time in the Wasatch and holy damn these are impressive ridges. Big kudos to Danny and the crew - I've been watching MA content for a couple years and it was really neat to explore the mountains you often feature. And to put in perspective just how tough these ridge linkups are (especially for folks like me who have no prior experience in the Wasatch. Cheers and keep up the excellent content!

this is so weird to watch. the whole time they are talking about how bad they feel and how their spirits are down and how they are mad, all at the same time as they are standing in perfect view of utterly gorgeous sights, not to mention they are mountain hiking too. add that with those incredible sights, how on earth could you be aggrivated or down? and they are so worried on time. i would be striving to make the trip as long as possible because of how amazing it is. i dont. its just weird to me.

Rewatching this again and I love it. Your mental toughness hep me push here in CO 14ers!
Im curious after consuming all the Mediocre Amateur content and wanted to know from Danny - usually when I feel weak stomach Id eat something thats light on my stomach like a smoothie or rice and beans or some quinoa. Pizza or burger is the last thing that comes to my mind although I love it. Why consume that in the most critical locations when you need the most mental and physical output?

What an amazing hike. The views are breath taking. I'm so impressed with you guys. Adam, you're a saint. Thanks for treating Elise as the royal queen. Elise, I love your music. I know you put in a lot of time in composing it. I noticed that mediocre Amateur shirts and hats are being advertised on your site. I look forward to your having a shirt and hat, as well. I can't wait to see your next adventure.

Side Note: AllTrailss version of WURL is loaded with 1 star reviews. Apparently while attempting this route in 2021 a 26-year-old experienced hiker died after falling 200 feet. The hikers friends subsequently left multiple bad reviews and were trying to get the route removed from AllTrails.

I did this ridge hike once in the nineties. Who am I kidding? I live in my parents basement.
You guys have what's called gallows humor. A very dark humor that comes out in moments of deep despair. Never lose that.

Looks like a really great trail. that I would not like to do alone or in the dark. I really enjoy these videos. I have to wonder where these boys live that they can get to such far flung places so often.

And you wonder why you have a weak stomach. no your stomach is plenty strong, its the PIZZA AND SUGARY BEVERAGES that make you sick. I have a solution, DONT DRINK/EAT GARBAGE WHILE HIKING.

I attempted the WURL a number of years ago. I was pretty confident at first, but by the time I got to Devils Castle I was moving so slow I knew I'd never make it so I called it a day.

Is it cheating to backpack this, and make it a two day venture? Just sleep one night. I want to complete this, but I'm not strong enough to climb for 24 hours straight

I like the comment This is intimidating going into the night. It was intimidating to watch during the day. One slip and bye bye. Did not need to see 15: 21.

Good job; I would say the food acidity is what made you sick along with too much at once. Yuk, Yuk, Yuk.
then you feel good, once its gone.
