A word of advice from a Greek about Greek Islands. Stay away from the myth of Myconos and Santorini. The second one, is sooo beautiful and the first one so cosmopolitan. Butthey are extremely expensive for what they offer -target group here are Rich Kids And New Monewy from China and Russia. In my opinion they are overrated. Take my advice, the advice of a Greek that had visited about 30 islands so far: IT REALLY DOES NOT MATTER WHERE YOU'LL GO! You can literally close your eyes and spot a place on the map and you'll go there and enjoy. Because all Greek islands has the basics. Clean, amazing beaches with super waters to swim? Check! Great food? Extra, extra Check! Facilities for the tourists? Check! Inland to walk and hidden villages to discover? Check! Night life? Check! Antiquities? Check! Cool and relaxed atmosphere? Check! There is nothing from the tourist's idea about Aegean Islands that is missing on each and every one of the islands. And I recommend Ionian islands too (Corfu, Zakinthos, Lefakada, Kefalonia-amazing) Just check on your personal taste, to see what fits you best. Some are more cosmopolitan, some more hipster-hippie, some very alive, some more cool and quiet. Don't go for the Myconos-Santorini myth, the same way, you wouldn't go near Frorida beaches during the spring Break. (Unless, you like Mykonos or Santorini atmosphere, and that's your thing, so, ok) Every island is amazing. And that comes from a Greek who does not believes that he lives in the best country in the world We have a lot of bad things, but on the islands, we have been truly blessed with beauty, and no matter where you'll go, you are gonna equally be amazed!

I just got back from a month in Greece, four islands, 3500 km driving on the mainland. Nicest people I've ever met. Except Rhodes old city, which was way to money grubbing and touristy. But the rest of the country is amazing. So beautiful everywhere, and such wonderful people
Stopped at the roadside coffeeshop far from the tourist sections on the highway from Iraklion to Matala. Just a little old lady and an elderly gentleman drinking coffee, no English. I order a coffee. She brings coffee, and I think because I had learned a few basic words of greek, which she appreciated, she also brought a big ole shot of rakki LOL (local moonshine, and a fresh pear. How nice is that? Similar things happened all around Greece outside of the tourist sections. Whole country is filled with people like that, completely fantastic place to holiday.
Just take the time to learn the very basics of the language and they will love you for it. Please, thank you, your welcome. Hello. good morning, good evening good night. Count to 100. Excuse me/sorry. And the alphabet. Those will get you a long ways in Greece, and you can add to it when you're there.

The situation with Greek beer is actually pretty interesting: for years, Athenian Brewery (the owner of the Amstel and Heineken brands in Greece, and also a distributor for many brands of soft drinks) used their established market position as well as unethical practices to form a cartel and hinder and discourage local brewers and even distribution of competing brands. E. g. a business carrying Amstel/Heineken could not also carry Vergina or Mythos, or else they risked being blacklisted from distribution of ALL brands carried by AB, or worse.

Hey Mark, I know this video is quite old but was hoping to get in a question about the level of service there. In some of your videos you comment on the quality of service in Eastern Europe as one of the five things you are not going to like. I know Greece has a totally different dynamic and history but since it does border some of these countries I'm curios how you can compare the level of service, in an average restaurant for example, to that of the same in Eastern Europe?

I would also add that people will smoke indoors, which can be problematic if you have asthma or other lung problems. Also, if you are in Athens there is a formidable amount of stray cats, so it smells like pee everywhere. Aside from that, I love Greece. Its very beautiful and the history gives you a unique perspective. Try the oranges, theyre amazing!

Amstel and Heineken in Greece are produced in Greece under licence. So essentially you drink a Greek beer when drinking these two. Other than that there are maybe 100 Greek beers some are very good even for a veteran beer drinker. They are mostly light, fizzy, kinda sweet type of beers, because of the hot weather.

Interesting about the beer, things have changed a bit since 2011 and apparently there is now many micro breweries in the country, probably a new hipster trend. Are they all good? I don't know. But I was surprised to see the variety of local beers you can now get even in big cities like Athens.

All 4 beers you named are piss. Just cheap beers sold by the barrel. You dont go to Greece to drink beer. There are lots of good greek wines, and ouzo, and tsipouro to get on your knees.

Nice video. The one thing I hate about it is the fact that there are numerous Greek Beers and it's not so hard to find them. Fix and Mythos where Greek before they were bought out.
