I LOST MY PASSPORT! WHAT DO I DO! Here we give you the step by step process of what to do if your passport does disappear. What to do if you lost your passport. First thing is to make sure you lost it, retrace your steps to make sure it is really gone, because if you report a lost passport and then find the passport it is invalid. So be sure it is gone. Next call your embassy or consulate to report the lost passport. Next visit the local police and file a missing passport or property form. Then head to your local embassy or consulate nearest you and apply for a new passport. Make sure to make photo copies of your passport to give to your family and have hidden away on yourself in case you do lose your passport

I lost my passport on my first foreign language trip to Ireland when I was 14 (1997) - and when I told my host family they were like: oh okay. I was scared - no idea about the procedure - only a few language kills and as I also only had treveller cheques which I needed ID for no money. So I got money with my bus pass as ID (pretty sure that wasn't company policy at the bank) and me and 3 students I've known for a week went to the German embassy on our own (no travel guide for the lil ol Ireland trip; -b. We had to take a train to another city (well village) as funnily enough the German embassy wasn't/isn't in Dublin. Arriving there they told me that I can't get a new passport without going to the police first. So off to the next village where a (I swear) red-headed policemen had lots of trouble spelling my name - getting my lost item report - back to the embassy.
So from experience (cause my classmate had the same problem 4 years later in London and we had to follow the same process.
1. Search for the passport again
2. definitely a police report
3. bring a set of passport pictures
4. bring a few bucks (replacement isn't expensive but cost more than the actual passport)
5. take mental notes 'cause lost passport stories are almost always entertaining (specially to non-travelling folk)
On a more serious note: that happening to me made me more mature, be more independent and deal with stuff rather than sticking my head in the sand and feel sorry for myself and waiting for others to take my hand and deal with stuff for me

I read in the comments below that you just carry around a photocopy of your passport with you. Is that good for everywhere, or are there certain places you should have your passport on you? Like day trips, should you bring your passport with you if your going on a day trip.
Example, I'm doing a day trip from Bruges, Belgium to Lisse, Netherlands to see the tulips.
If yes, Could you tell me which places you recommend to bring it.
The places im going are; Bruges, Belgium. Prague, Czech. Interlaken, Switzerland. Rome, Italy (with a possible day trip to Pompei. Paris, France(with a day trip to normady beaches, and another to versallies. And Edinburgh, Scotland. (possible day trip outside the city)

Great information Mark. I don't have anxiety abroad because like you, I leave my passport in the room and carry a color photocopy which has worked everywhere in Europe and Asia with one exception. It was not accepted at a casino in Bucharest earlier this year which was odd because I've never even been ID'd before at casinos in Amsterdam, Prague, London and Lisbon. BTW, probably a bad idea but I keep my passport locked in my suitcase - I've read stories about hotel safes. Anyway, going to start locating the embassy before every trip moving forward. Oh and only one week 'til Vienna!

Awww. I thought you'd cover about what if there IS NO consulate or embassy in the country you are in. I am from Mexico and my wife is from Cambodia and it is a thought that I have always had in the back of my mind when I am there, as the only Latin American country with embassy in Cambodia is Cuba (not even Spain has an embassy. I have heard that maybe the Cuban or US embassy would be able to help me in that event, or maybe the Thai or Vietnamese embassies (as there ARE Mexican embassies there, but I have never been confirmed. :(

This is one of those cases where I'm all for digitizing or embedding a microchip in one's skin. The passport is a freaken notebook. Not even a large or conspicuous one. And in many countries, it's even flimsily produced and dark colored. I don't understand why losing a small booklet is pretty much kissing your international vacation goodbye. Our tech products have it, our pets have it, why can't we have it?

Another informative one Wolt!
You could check with the taxi drivers, in my experience they seem like a helpful bunch, depends I suppose. Maltese taxi drivers? Well, with Maltase public transport being what it is brilliant it's no wonder they look so bitter & so very cross.

Who is that person who is super paranoid about losing their passport and checks legit every 30 seconds cause that is everyone in my family and no one has ever lost their passport.

Great advice. I was on the International Space Station & forgot my passport during a space walk. It took hours to convince the crew to let me back in.

These are all great tips, Mark, thank you! Although going through that process of getting visa and work permit again sounds like a complete nightmare. :/
