Wolter, I am travelling to Paris in a Couple of months, but I have to Carry a Backpack because I have a Special Needs Child who has a Special Diet, and that means I have to Prepare her Foods at the place where we are Staying, Put it in Containers, and Bring it everywhere We Go in a Backpack. She cannot eat Restaurant Food like I can. I know going everywhere with a Backpack will make me a target, but is it Dangerous to Walk around in Paris, or Europe in General with a Backpack, even when I have on Me, and don't Put Down anywhere. Do Pickpockets Open Backpacks?

Here's objective data. On a crime index ranking of 2018 Paris is 92nd. Cities with more crime but relatively close on the ranking - Baghdad 89, Tehran 87, Guadalajara Mexico 85. Cities safer than Paris - Harare Zimbabwe 97, Tijuana Mexico 99, Beirut Lebanon 113, Kolkata and Bangalore in India 114th and 115th. London 132, Berlin 196, Madrid 194, Budapest 232, Warsaw Poland 257. I hope this answers the question. If not, ask one of the nice police officers on the streets of Paris holding a machine gun and wearing anti-stab vest.

Paris is NOT safe We were waiting at a traffic light (in our car) waiting for the lights to change
All of a sudden our window was smashed
And a guy swiped my wife's handbag from her
Lap. i tried to chase him but he escaped on a motorcycle. NO ONE batted an eye. NO HELP
Just other car hooting, for us to move out of the way
I worked in Paris every year for our trade shows
But it has gone down hill
Now the sewer of Europe
Avoid at all costs

I have been to Paris 7 times in my life, I never had any safety issues, but then I like to think of myself as a sensible traveler and I keep my valuables safe. Central Paris and tourist areas are largely pretty safe. I would advise against going into any of the seedy establishments around Pigalle. If you fancy a naughty night time tour of Paris join a group tour. May be don't visit the depressed banlieus, but then why would you want to?

I have returned from Paris a few days ago. I don't work for Apple but being able to ask Siri on my iPhone, Where is the nearest Paris Metro? was extremely helpful. Google Maps was a constant companion as well as the Paris Metro app. Is Paris safe? Well, I live in Chicago so from my perspective I'd say yes. When the Romani women would approach me and ask, Do you speak English? I would shake my head no and they would walk away.

I used to go to France many times & stay a night in Paris before going to Nice. Everytime I was there, not necessarily in Paris, my car was broken into & stuff were stollen. Even in Nice in the airport hotel my car was broken into. Driving back to the UK in Lyon on the motorway I stopped for coffee, the same happened. I never go there again, ever!

Just like it is unlikely you will be bitten by a spider in Australia, and it is unlikely you will be shot by a lone gunman in America, it is unlikely you will be involved in a terrorist attack in Paris. Of course anything is possible, but you shouldn't let your fear of unlikely threats keep you from experiencing the great adventure of the world.

Reports of rapes in France are up at least 20% over the last few years. If you assume a constant ratio of reported and unreported then this is a very high number. Be smart if you are a woman. Stay away from immigrant areas. In practice, this means avoid Paris.
