Join me today on the Amtrak Coast Starlight up America. We-ll go from Los Angeles Union station all the way up to Seattle. Enjoy stunning ocean views out over the pacific coastline to lush forests and the mountains of Oregon. Encompassing three states and nearly 2, 000 miles, this is one epic sleeper train trip. I-ll be showing you exactly what it-s like with a tour of my bedroom, what food service is on offer and of course the famous viewing car. This is one of America-s great rail journeys, and you-re coming along too. Don: As someone that loaded rail cars and had dealings with both Union Pacific and BNSF. Amtrak is the priority, however they can be held up by freight trains because they are on the same tracks. The freight companies are fined for holding up amtrak. anyone who has spent time on amtrak will see freight trains pulled over onto sidings to let them pass. However the rule is whoever gets to the siding first, pulls into the siding. I worked in Klamath falls, so i'm familiar with the route you took.

Freight trains vs. Amtrak - it depends on the route. Obviously some tracks are shared with commuter services, particularly in the Northeast US, and those lines give priority to passenger traffic in general. But most of the long-distance trains travel the majority of their route over tracks owned by freight railroads. And in those cases, train prioritization depends on the contract Amtrak has with the railroad that owns the track and whether everything is on schedule. (Edit) As Amtrak's budget has some dependency on the government, and funding can vary according to which party is in power, it's possible for different freight lines to have different prioritization from year to year, which is probably the biggest reason this question produces so many mixed responses.
One more thing to keep in mind: It's the US, so tip your sleeper attendant.

Several years ago I tried to buy tickets to take Amtrak from Seattle to LA, and from there to Denver and back to Seattle. I was unable to receive any human assistance with planning the trip or buying the tickets and the automated on-line ticket process was impossible to use. And it offered this robot voice assistant that was insultingly unhelpful. So I guess Amtrak does not care.

Did the ticket price include meals for two people, or just one person? I'm just wondering if splitting the cost of the room would mean the second person would also have to purchase their meals.

I worked on the Union Pacific Railroad for forty years and yes Freight trains take preference over Amtrak on rails that are shared. That is why Amtrak is seldom on time. But a wonderful way to travel.

Do you have any money saving trips? I want to go with my wife from Chicago to Seattle but it's just so expensive for a room. We could fly first class cheaper

Nothing about Amtrak impresses me for what it cost the taxpayers for it to run. It should be much nicer and the food way better for the money they charge.
