September 4, 2019 marked the last day American Airlines would operate their iconic MD-80 Super 80 aircraft in revenue service. It was the #Super80Sendoff. I couldnt miss this retirement day for the American Airlines MD-80. So I hope youll join me on this special flight! When American Airlines announced the last American Airlines MD-80 flight, from Dallas to Chicago, they named the flight American Airlines flight 80, in honor of the Super 80. That flight sold out quickly! But I was able to snag a seat on the last American Airlines MD-80 flight from Raleigh, NC to Dallas, TX. This American Airlines MD-80 Flight would also give me access to the party thrown before the very last Super 80 flight ever. In this video, well explore a little of the history of the American Airlines MD-80

Nice video. I was actually on the MD-80 that pushed out to ORD from C2. I am a 31 year AA ramp employee and they have used my photos in the past, such as the S80 shot taking off to announce the retirement. I got a call two days before the flight and they offered me a seat. How lucky. It was a great flight. One of the 2 captains flying that day talked about having to learn French on his new aircraft! All the passengers signed 2 safety cards to be taken to the C. R. Smith Museum. All of the overhead bins and walls were written on by the passengers leaving their final good byes and maybe a memory. I am lucky to have been a part of that planes legacy below the wing for most of my days and the last revenue trip put of DFW.

Oh man I wish I'd known about that day! My family has a history with American Airlines, My mom worked for American for 35 years she was instrumental in welcoming the new MD-80 to come to Sacramento as a flight operation agent. Me and my brother worked as ramp agents loading and unloading, towing and marshaling in the MD-80 in 1987 I even got a taxi license to taxi the MD-80 from parking apron to the gate. What memories! Thank you for this video such bittersweet memories!

Jeb, just found this video. I work for LSG/Sky Chefs. I am a 34 year employee. I have probably catered every single Super 80 that AA had. I have also traveled for work and leisure on the Mad Dog so much that I knew every sound that it made. A friend from high school, she married a AA pilot. He is one of the First Officers to pilot one of the last S-80's to Roswell. Special video in my heart.

Great video trip report. If I was on this flight, I would sit behind, just in front of the engine to enjoy the sound of the JT8D engines. I was lucky enough to experience the MD-80 with Far Eastern Air Transport. Great plane this is, a memory that will always stay with me for the rest of my life.

Lol, how do you guys remember what plane you flew on as a kid? I flew quite a bit at that age but don't remember a thing about any of the planes I flew on. I only remember flying on a double-decker one time. I thought that was the neatest thing, since most planes I flew on only had one level.
reply

Really! I was on that flight! I missed you! I also lost all my footage and was hoping i could find ether another pilot like me or a enthusiast like you. I obviously wasn't the pilot for this type of aircraft but I really enjoyed this momentum occasion. Also had a little to much wine

I flew an MD-80 back in 2017 from DFW to SAT. It was barely an hour, but because of the old livery, I knew it was a retro plane. The plane was fairly old, but my most interest was the rear door at the tail. Not a long time with the MD-80 but I loved the new experience

My dad was an AA pilot for years. My first flight was in an Md-80. Spent a lot of my life as a non-rev standby passenger in that last row by the engine. He now flies the md-80 for Erickson Aerotanker where he is an aerial firefighter

Flying into Love Field on southwest is a great experience because you are much lower and closer to downtown. Ill never forget flying right next to downtown at sunset with the sun behind the buildings, extremely beautiful

My first flight was also on AAL, 722 service BNA-DFW then another 722 DFW PHX. The flight home was a 727 then a 732. That was in 1976. From 1984 until 1991 it was all Angry Puppies. In 1993 I finally got my PPL.

I've only been one an MD-80 once from MSY to DFW. To be honest I wasn't impressed and I thought the plane was going to rip apart in the air. I was glad to be back on the ground when I reached Dallas.

I am Executive Platinum on AA and I have such a fond memory of the Mad Dog. It gets a bad rap by some, but this is the plane I flew the most often when I first got interested in aviation. Great video!

Those MD-80 airplanes that originally flew the skys for TWA will always have a special place with me. I truly miss seeing those Trans World Airlines MD-80s at the airports they were truly iconic
reply

Interesting how many memories I have tied to airlines rather than aircraft. (Many of those airlines are now defunct. Also individual airports. Ask me about individual cars models, however.
reply

Me personally Ive never ridden the md-80 but it seems like an awesome aircraft but sadly they are gone now so I will never get to experience one, atleast not a American md-80
reply

Thanks for the vid sir - my very first flight on ANY jet liner was on an MD80 with Reno Air. We had a super nice hot shoe take off out of Seatac and I was hooked.
reply

Man, I really wish I couldve experienced this. I knew it was happening but I just couldnt afford to fly out to another airport just to fly somewhere else.

American last passengers on MD-80: Sitting and chilling
Delta last passengers on MD-80: Starts to tear a few pieces from the interior as a souvenir.

MD-80, back in the 2000s, you were the aircraft that I thought of when the topic of short-distance flights came up.
You have a nice long sleep!

I remember one flight on the MD-80: DCA to DFW in June of 2006. My brother, Matthew, was with me and he was solving sudoku puzzles.

7: 01 Seeing the final pushback made me think back to the myriads of MD-80 flts ive taken on this icon.
Where has the time gone?

reply

5: 20, This is supposed to be a sad day, and some random 8-year-old (probably their age) started playing Never gonna give you up.

i remember flying a mad dog. i was in the back where the window seat was facing an engine, all i could see was the engine.

I was on one of their last flights. I went from Des Moines to Dallas. I am happy to know I was on one of the last flights.

I flew on an md-90 for delta airlines and American when going to new york so I am glad I had a chance to fly on this plane
reply

Nearly every flight I took for most of my life were on DC-9, MD80, MD88, MD90 aircraft. They were very nice. 737's suck.
reply

Growing up with Dayton as my home airport this as well as Delta's MD-88 and MD-90s are the planes I grew up flying.
reply

I hated sitting next to the engines, I kept thinking it's gonna explode and slice me open. Real twilght zone vibes.
reply

I've been looking for this video. MD-80s were my favorite planes to fly in. Always had the smoothest rides.
reply

Delta and southwest are my favorites and I have never flown with AA but the old AA livery is my favorite.
